Thought I'd share this with you guys. I've had my eye on Travis' surface grinder attachment a while now, for the KMG.
I was finally able to pick it up, put it to work right away. So far I like it a lot, one thing to note, is that Travis designed this for his TW90. When adapted to the KMG, something I noticed right away is how much weight there is to cycle the table back and forth. Not a huge deal, but definitely a workout. Runs extremely smooth, but has a small learning curve for how fast or slow to surface grind material. If you pause at all, it will develop a groove in that area.

The nice thing, is how fast you can get a clean finish. I do have to watch the heat on blades post ht, so every few passes I will splash a little water on the blank.

Here it is setup on the grinder:

Practice piece @ 60 grit:

Something I wanted to try, but do not recommend- as it will remove a ton of material off your belts. I went straight from a 60 grit VSM to 320 Gator.

Nice. I hadn't thought of using the gator belts but will give it a try...looks like a great finish.

I have a friend that has a surface grinder that's converted to a 2x72 belt grinder. He uses a 220 gator and only grinds pre ht. He also goes pretty fast.

Thats a whole lot of surface grinding for one day...did you surface grind the cat and the mail box too??

I would love to have one of those

Man that is awesome. Congratulations on the purchase. A surface grinder of some sort is very high on my list.

I've had my eye on one as well. Where did you get your wheel and what size?

Obviously, the need to mount the unit vertically and at an angle on the KMG is a compromise compared to the original TW90 unit, but that still is pretty freaking sweet!!!!!! Of course, the bad news is that, like all cool devices made in limited numbers that require a lot of man hours, it is not cheap!!!!!

No, but I probably could have! lol

Thanks, took me a long time to buy one.

The SGA from Tavis comes with the whole arm and wheel, that's part of why it costs so much. I believe it's a 5''x2.5'' 90 durometer serated wheel.

Worth the price imo. Not a necessary tool, but makes my life a lot easier.
This is a another good reason to get the kmg horizontal
Works just fine like it is. I plan to get a TW90 at the end of the year anyway.

Yes indeed. It leaves an extremely nice finish.

Are you using a serrated contact wheel? I seem to recall Travis saying that was one way to reduce potential overheating problems.

Thanks Mob. I want one of these so badly, but they are just out of my range right now. Very cool piece of equipment though.

Nice work.

How much did this beast run you and how long was the wait? This is very appealing to someone with limited space.

Just pulled the trigger on one of these. Cost depends on whether you get have a KMG or TW-90 and if you get the small or large magnetic table. Here's his website: www.traviswuertz.com. Or call him. I called to check on my order and he is very personable and helpful.
