I am looking to get a new fixed blade for field carry. I have been using a folder as my primary for the last year or so. A spyderco Manix and occasionally a Griptillian.

I am deciding between an RC-3 (Sorry For the confusion) and a Falkniven F1 any suggestions on why one or the other is a better choice.

i have heard alot that the F1 handle is too small...so that might be a consideration.

other than that i don't have experience with either one but i'm sure someone more helpful will be along shortly.

Well, if you dont want a custom (which I would recommend) at least get the RC-3, instead of the RAT 3. The RAT 3's handle is too small for me, and if you cant tell by my pictures, I have small hands.

BY RC-3 do you mean the one that is actually by rat and not Ontario.

I intended to by the RAT and not the Ontario for one reason because it has a nifty orange handle.

I have thick hands, so small handles are actually comfortable for me.

I am considering a custom Possibly from Stomper or Breeden but I think that will be next month

Yes, by RC-3 I mean the one made by RAT Cutlery. That's what it is called. The RAT 3 is made by Ontario, and is inferior (and I'm not just saying that because they have a beef, it really isnt as quality a blade). But, for the same money, or maybe less, one of the makers will get you hooked up with exactly what you want. Koyote is really good, and dont overlook David Farmer either. Here's a 3.5 incher that I just had a friend of mine make for me, and I'm really pleased with it.

I prefer the F1 quite a bit. I lack the lack of choil, and the handle while thin is still more substantial (and thicker) than the RC3. I also enjoy the full convex grind.

Mntnfolk Mike and BDW1975 are the true 3" affictionendos here abouts. I would see what they recommend.

The simple truth is that there are plenty of great knives out there in this size range. There are also a number of great customs that can be had for a remarkably reasonable price.

Here is my (actually my wife's) Breeden kat. I decided to get a custom sheath made for it, and decided at the time to get one that could serve as both a neck sheath and one for belt carry. Normark actually decided that I'd be better off with two sheaths. His wisdom rang true. So this little knife serves both.

Oops - I wasn't reading this thread so carefully. I wouldn't want to disway you from an RC-purchase either. They are great knives. The RC-4 and RC-3 have the exact same handle. So here is a pic. of my RC-4 in the hand.

Those RC-3 are also excellent knives!

i had forgot about david farmer...
he has some really great blades that are very affordable and awesome. you could probably find one in your size and price range by him.

If you are considerin a JK, This is my suggestion. Its got a 3in blade, and in hand feels like an RC3. About the same price, maybe a little cheaper, and John is a quick guy, and a pleasure to deal with....

Out of the F1 or the RC, my choice would have to be the RC3.

How did I know that you were the one who ordered the 3"-er shown on his website? :D

Dave Farmer is definitely a great choice too, as others have said. Some awesome steel and easily one of the (if not the) best edges I've ever had on a knife.

It's a great knife. Fits the hand well, though a tad small for my hands, super sharp, and excellent excellent quality. I love the full high flat grind as well.

It's not a knife I would put in the ultralight category. But its tough as nails, and good looking too!
