Picking the first one!

A light Weight Native in S90.

Easy to wash out.
A old toothbrush if the crud is
embeded in the FRN.

Between the Native 5 and the Delica I'd take the Delica anyday. But that's me, you probably won't be disappointed with either for your first, because it probably won't be your last. The FRN of either one is probably a good choice, lightweight and still solid.

I didn't know they didn't have liners! Good info!

You better get that Spyder bite checked out! It's pretty bad.. lol..

And gets worse!

Probably not all of them or all that I have had, come and go!

A friend if mine had both Native & Delica, ended up selling the Native. His remarks was tha Native blade with much belly and higher tip position doesn't lend to long slicing motion when the edge moves away from the object. This is also what Jazzz mentioned in the wharnie Delica thread. A Delica has more straight edge and it's point is relatively lower, thus keeping the object within the slicing motion a bit longer.

Not dissing either one, just some points to consider. It also depends on what is the material being cut and one's usual style of working the knife. Perhaps get both and try them out?

YOU ALL ARE A BAD INFLUENCE!! This Spyder bite was getting really itchy and I had to do something with it!!! I found a native 5 g10 for an awesome price last night.......had to do it!!

Almost did a 2 for 1 deal on a grey delica too but I'm just not big on the grey. I'll probably get one at the knife show in 2 weeks even if I have to pay a bit more. I think I want orange.

Ugh, now the agonizing wait to get it in the mail!

Okay, I'm different. You do some pretty rough work; you need a rough(er) knife, IMO.
Spyderco TECHNO. I've had maybe seven; I keep one NIB in my knife-box. Smaller knife; blade-length you want.
Available in S30V or CTS-XHP...both good steels although I prefer XHP...
Thicker blade-stock for when you pry out staples and cut wiring. Titanium slabs will last you forever...plus twenty yrs. Rock-solid lockup.
Nice wire clip; stays there; won't get lost. VERY WELL thought of on this forum.
Definitely a heavier-duty choice than the Delica, etc.
Good luck.

Good luck with the purchase. I'm generally in line with the N5 LW recommendations that were given, though also agree that the Delica would serve you well too. Agree with Gringo on the Salt recommendation but since you seem new to sharpening maybe holding off on the H1 steel is a good idea until you pick up the Sharpmaker - which BTW is inevitable. One idea I hadn't heard that I thought I would toss out there is the Delica with a saber grind rather than the FFG. This gives a more stout blade for the heavier work you describe but still provides a lightweight and compact package. Maybe the Delica in ZDP189? Harder to find these days and a bit more expensive but the steel is absolutely top notch and it meets all your requirements. You might also give the Manix 2 LW a shot as well. I know it's a bit larger but darn if it isn't a fine knife for the price. I promise you you'll get used to it and it'll surprise you from a weight to performance perspective. Maybe a consideration for the next purchase - which is ALSO inevitable. ;). Good luck with things and welcome to the Spyderco community.

Native LW or Delica.

Either of these should serve you well. The VG10 on the Delica will probably be easier to sharpen but not last as long between sharpening as the steel on the Native. I suck at sharpening, but have had no trouble keeping a very sharp edge on my Delica with the Sharpmaker. The Native is probably a bit tougher design, but I prefer the Delica overall. The Manix LW is awesome as well, but is likely a bit larger than you are looking for.

I'm a midlock guy myself but, if you're right handed, I'd suggest something with open construction, such as the Sage 1, Sage 2, the new Sage 5 or, if you want something less expensive, the Cat. Those would be the easiest to hose out if they got filled with crud.

Sometimes I lay pipe as well. The knife I'm always carrying is a PM2 110 my pockets completely fill up with dirt blow the knife out with my mouth works perfectly. It also works good to cut the 1 inch poly laterals we use around here.Hope you have as a luck whatever you choose.

I think the Native 5 LW is a great choice. The G10 Native is beautiful but I find it quite heavy in the pocket and I prefer lightweight knives. The N5 lock (on either)is a pleasure to operate one handed. Regarding the N5 vs the Delica, the Delica is slightly lighter and also noticeably slimmer, so I find it carries a little easier. The Delica also has slightly more cutting edge, which I find makes it surprisingly more useful for slicing stuff, especially food. I'm not sure why such a minimal increase in blade length should make a difference, but it does.

I love the Delica. It is so nice and slim. I carry mine without the clip and just drop it in my pocket where it takes up very little room. The N5 is a lot stouter of a knife and would be a good choice. But I cannot go out of the house without a Delica. In fact, I ordered some custom grips from Boomer52 here on the forum to jazz up one of mine.

Let me add that Surfingringo has a great suggestion regarding the Salt 1. This is basically a rust proof Delica. Get the serrated blade. The H1 steel cannot rust and it will apparently hold an edge for a long time, but you can easily sharpen it.

or start a bit smaller and get a Dragonfly Salt! Nice way to try Spyderco serrations, H1 steel, small sized super ergonomic folders, the wire clip...
