About an hour ago I was helping a friend put on a steering wheel cover at an auto parts store. (I ran into him there and was being a nice guy I wasn't with him)
He's one of those people that you talk to, but don't spend time with because you're not sure if you like them. :D
As were walking to his car he spotted my Delica clipped to my pocket. He poked it with the steering wheel cover and said:
"I got a knife that would make that thing look like a freaking toy."
Keep in mind this guy is really cocky, and I know him well enough to know it wouldn't be something high end.
Now usually this is where I take it out and start explaining the features and the price etc., but I chose to just say "yeah ok" and change the subject.
It wouldn't have gotten me anywhere to start an argument.
You guys been here before?

The real question is who needs help putting on a steering wheel cover? We all know those people who know everything and have cooler toys than we could ever have.

Good point...if only you could have pulled out a tube of Astroglide and said "let me help you with that".

I always say "Oh yeah, what ya got?" . I love to look at Frost cutlery bowie knives.

I hope you put the steering wheel cover on inside out.

Yeah, but usually they're not making a comparison. Some of my friends think a knife is a knife and that there is no difference in quality.

One of my friends, for some misguided, probably nonsensical reason, wanted a Nazi dagger. This friend(I use the term lightly) gets really excited discussing this thing as if it were some sort of heirloom, and in fact tells me that it is the real deal.

Meanwhile, I go online to check what something like that is worth, and it turns out to be in the >$2000 range. So I see this person again, and they whip out a pot metal "Nazi" dagger, clearly dull, clearly marked "Made In China".

I did what I normally do in those situations; I stared blankly and nodded as they talked about it. People see what they want to see, and I guess if they're happy living in the dark, that's fine by me.

I'd also like to reiterate that I have no idea why this person wanted this kind of memorabilia, and that I am in no way affiliated with that concept.

One good thing about Hitler is that he killed Hitler.

You know, I've kinda put down knives which people showed me and felt bad later. If it's at least a Gerber (I know) or something then at least they are trying. An engineer at work saw my Opinel and we started talking knives. He whipped out his Gerber to show me and I think I sniffed "Well, I don't really like Gerber.".

I felt a little guilty and later gave him a budget knife in 8cr13mov. He loved it, tells me it does hold and edge better and we shoot the breeze about knives whenever he walks by.

Now fantasy knives may be fair game.. no...I don't mean that.. yes I do... no I don't

That's exactly why I keep a CS Natchez Bowie XL in the trunk.....just for this kinda stuff.:D

It's called being mature + knowing social norms. Unless you're 12 it would be pretty immature to start a debate over something so trivial and with someone who is obviously a plethora of ignorance. I've been in plenty of those situations where I just play the game..... I say, "wow really... nicee" but in my head I'm thinking, "what an idiot".

Shoulda asked him to show you. "Oh, you don't have it on you? Lotta good your big badass blade is gonna do you in a drawer at home"

Well you folks are right about not judging people based on knives, but this guy thinks everything he touches, owns, and says is better than you or what you have.

The guy is clearly a badass, I mean he needs a steering wheel cover to prevent his callous bear-like hand from tearing up his steering wheel. So I see no reason to judge his knife manliness. :-)

Yup, with a friend like that I would help him get the steering wheel cover on just perfectly..............................................and then take out my Delica and cut the thing to pieces!!!! Whoops........

Slightly off topic:

My friend was at my house the other day when I recieved my order of paper wheels, so I explained to him how they work etc...

I started out by sharpening a paki balisong to get the hang of it, and after I was done, he said "I'll test the sharpness"; Im like, ok buddy.. he continues to slide the blade down his arm and remove a large patch of hair, he was amazed at how sharp it was (not really that sharp)...

Once I got the hang of them, I tried a more expensive knife; my manix2. I told my friend "if you thought that Bali was sharp, wait till you see this:D". I reprofiled the manix to 20-25 inclusive and again he says "I'll test the sharpness". I hand him the knife and he proceeds to shave his leg hair. He slid the knife down his leg so fast, not only did he take the hair off his shin, he took about 3" of skin with it:p:D. It was morbid, it literally cut him down to the bone:eek:

The next day I was with the same friend, and someone needed to cut open a package, so I pulled out the same manix, and my friend yells "don't use that knife, that thing can do surgery!!!":D

The folks that I know who get excited about that stuff also get excited about the Allied memorabilia. Often, it's the thrill of owning something "historical," and here in the US, Nazi memorabilia would appear to be more rare, thus "cooler" to own. Some of them didn't know squat about what they were doing when they started, but soon learned the difference between Chinese knock-off stuff and the real deal.
