It was really nice out today so I took Alayna for a picnic and a hike.

Our load-out for the day.

An eclectic assortment of gear.

These were the knives on hand. The orange handled CRK&T stayed in the console where I keep it, I just had it out looking at it so included it in the shot.

Picnic before the hike, Alayna attacked the block of cheese right off. She cut one piece for me, then one piece for her…notice I got the smaller piece lol.

Alayna noting how much alike our knives are

Just kicking back and enjoying the day out, and pointing at shapes in the clouds

Hmmm, this cheese needs to be in smaller pieces…

Custom, D2 steel, desert ironwood handle, and mosaic pins…Alayna’s first knife sure blows my first one out of the water…

Dessert time, and time to goof off.

Time to head out, what direction are we going?

IMG_6221.jpg

Found some future Blackberries.

She spotted some wild onions.

I swear that girl seldom has one foot on the ground much less two…

IMG_6231.jpg

Found an odd track I can’t quite make out.

And lots of ant hills…though oddly enough none invaded our picnic.

It seemed too soon that the sun was going down, and it was time to go. Then we stopped for a milkshake on the way home and found a Luna moth. I’m not sure which one of us had more fun, but we definitely have to do this again soon.

Great post mist! I like both those fixed blades, but the patina on that old schrade is beautiful. Couldn't believe your daughter would just gobble an onion like that, she has great taste. On the first picture of the rasberries, the big tri-lobed leaf in front of your daughter's face looks like it could be moonseed (poisonous grape look-alike) but the invaginations on the leaf look a bit too pronounced. In any case the berries they produce look like grapes and often entice children to eat them even if they are apparently bad tasting.

Looks like a good time. Thanks for posting, appreciated.

Great pics mist!Yeah, her first knife blows mine away too. But,that old Schrade brings back some memories, wish I still had mine. That track kind of looks like bear to me.

Thanks for posting. Looks like good memories were made that day.

Hmmm...im going to look that track up. Too bad its not clearer. The moth/swarmer/butterfly is beautiful!! Looks like leaf.

That's great, you must have taught her well on useing knives, she sure is close to those fingers, she looks like a sweetheart.Definetely calls for another trip!!!Regards Butch

man that looks like a awesome time in the woods. mist nothing better than time out on the trail with the little one. she looks extremely happy

the best time of all our lives, quality companionship with kiddos. first time on the luna moth for me , thanks.---dennis

Awesome! You can't beat times like that with little ones... Great photos.

Thanks for sharing. Looks like you both had a ton of fun. I can't believe she is just biting into the onion, though. I didn't like onions that early, although I can't understand why, now.

Thanks Ken, glad you enjoyed the post. Yeah the Woodsman has taken on a great patina over time. It’s not my original one that I got back in the early 1980 but it still brings back all of the memories of exploring the Chattahoochee River Valley and all of the islands down in Alabama. Oh Alayna really loves onions, any time she is helping me cook I have to watch that she doesn’t eat all of the ones we dice lol, and we can’t go hiking without her wanting at least one. I don’t recall anything like that on these vines, but thanks for the information, I will definitely keep my eyes open. We do have a lot of wild grapes in this area but I know what those are.

Thanks grim, glad you liked it. Oh, I love the Woodsman, it’s not my first knife by a long shot. I didn't get the first model 165 until I was fifteen. My first fixed was a bone handled Edgemark, it was a nice knife don’t get me wrong, just had a weak tang. I would much rather have had one of Johns knives…or Andy’s, or a TOPS, a Becker, or a RAT lol.

The track puzzles me. I couldn’t find any others, it doesn’t look overlapped, but seems to have more than four toes.

Luna moths are really neat, they look like leaves with eyes.

Thanks, yeah she has been helping prep the veggies while cooking for some time now, plus John made sure that knife wasn't all that sharp before he sent it to her. If it had one of his usual edges I’d be afraid to let her use it, that will have to come later. Oh, and I am already looking forward to the next one.

Great post Mist

Please keep those a coming Bro!!!!!

Thanks Bill, I’m glad you liked the post.

Yeah, lol, she didn't want to go to sleep the night before because she was excited. She kept coming in the living room saying “I love going to the woods” and “I love going on picnics” :)

Great stuff buddy, that moth is awesome !

Yeah they are really cool, you should see one of the large ones!

Thanks guys, I don’t have time tonight to do the usual multi-quoting of everyone, but I am really glad you guys enjoyed the post. Alayna and I had a blast, I am already looking forward to the next one and wondering where me might go.
