Got this hatchet head recently and cleaned it up. I was hoping somebody recognizes it or has some ideas. It had some gold paint on it and the number 600 on the underside.

European, 600 gram weight, my guess is from Germany.

Helko of Germany makes hatchets ranging fron 600 grams (1.3 pounds) to 1000 grams (2.2 pounds), as well as axes, which are available in the USA. Here's their 800 gram hatchet:

I think I might have found a match. Same shape and color, 600 grams.

Looks to be nothing special, probably made in China. I think I'll haft it and sharpen it anyway and see how it does.

Oh thanks Steve, I didn't realize anyone had responded. I hope its German and not Chinese. I have heard that differential heat treatment of the bit can be a sign of higher quality, so maybe it is Helko, and not Chinese.

Here she is, with a handle off another old hatchet. It's a ratty little thing but it worked fine limbing up a small Douglas Fir today.
