Just got back from an overnight to the Delaware state Forest in PA. The weather was great yesterday, but was a little cold and rainy this morning.
Here is all the gear I carried, minus some food and a tent.
This is a small hatchet. I got the blank from Jantz Supply and handled it. It chops pretty well for its size and it quite useful it getting smaller wood for fires.
This is a 8.5 inch, 1/4 inch thick knife I made. Its nice for splitting wood because I can just beat on it without worrying about it. It doesn't chop quite as well as the hatchet, mainly because the edge is fairly thick. Here it is being used to split a black birch log to make a bow. The tree has just fallen over due a recent storm so it was still pretty green. The bow ended up taking too long and I gave up the project and ended burning it (sorry no pictures).
24 inch snow and nealley axe with a reprofiled edge and mirror polished head. This little axe is great, it has the chopping ability of a bigger axe, but is small enough to pack in.
Since the forest was full of birch trees, we attempted to make a simplified birch beer by just boiling twigs in water. It did not end up being too good. I think the real recipe adds sugar and honey. It probably would have worked better had we removed the outter bark.
