Just got back from an overnight to the Delaware state Forest in PA. The weather was great yesterday, but was a little cold and rainy this morning.

Here is all the gear I carried, minus some food and a tent.

This is a small hatchet. I got the blank from Jantz Supply and handled it. It chops pretty well for its size and it quite useful it getting smaller wood for fires.

This is a 8.5 inch, 1/4 inch thick knife I made. Its nice for splitting wood because I can just beat on it without worrying about it. It doesn't chop quite as well as the hatchet, mainly because the edge is fairly thick. Here it is being used to split a black birch log to make a bow. The tree has just fallen over due a recent storm so it was still pretty green. The bow ended up taking too long and I gave up the project and ended burning it (sorry no pictures).

24 inch snow and nealley axe with a reprofiled edge and mirror polished head. This little axe is great, it has the chopping ability of a bigger axe, but is small enough to pack in.

Since the forest was full of birch trees, we attempted to make a simplified birch beer by just boiling twigs in water. It did not end up being too good. I think the real recipe adds sugar and honey. It probably would have worked better had we removed the outter bark.

How far did you hike in??

We hiked in about 2 miles, waded across an knee deep river, and hiked backed the way we had come on the other side of the river. Our final location was about 1.5 miles from the trail head.

The extra steel added a lot of weight, but I didn't mind as it was one of the few times I really get to use my stuff.

Nice pics Andrew! How was the weather like?

Also, I am gonna need more pics of the blue knife! Did you say you made that??

Nice job!

Looks like a lot of fun, even if your birch beer didn't turn out. Nice pics!

Taking out the ol' supplies for a test, uhh? Looks like you had a great day.

Now, can I see the knife up close please?

I was going to say thats a lot of equipment for an over nighter...

I totally agree, its more than I usually take, but it was a short hike so I wanted to take it to test things out and show stuff to a friend that came along.

The weather on Sunday was great, probably in the upper 50s to low 60s. Warm enough to take a quick dunk in the river and then run to our fire to warm up. The overnight temp dropped into the high thirties. I only brought my new 60 degree Eureka peformance bag (in the black case in the upper left of the top picture) because I wanted to test it in extreme weather. I bundled up a lot, but was only a little cold so overall I am pretty pleased with it. It compacts up to about half the size of my air matress.

I did make that blue knife. Its 1095, with blue G10 Handle.

I have a few pictures of it on my camera: here they are.

That egg container wasn't full, but it did make a good breakfast. For dinner, we took hot dogs and soup (cooked it right in the can). For snacks, I took some beef jerky and peanuts.

I didn't snap too many pictures of the area. It was mostly just pretty ordinary woods aside from the nice river.

Looks like a great time. I REALLY LIKE the blue knife. You might want to start a new career!

Great pics - We tried to set up a M&G up that way last year and it kind of fizzled out. I hope we can get one going there in the future.

Thanks for sharing the pics.

Those are some cool knives you made  Looks like a really nice area you were in as well.
