Hey gang!

Here's a bunch of pictures from Harley's Hammer-In... I met lots of good people, although the weather kind of sucked.

I haven't managed to label any of the pics, but I'll try and work on it!

Looks like a great time. Man, I wish I could have made it. How'd the smelt turn out?

Great pics ! My only gripe is that I couldn't enlarge the pics. One of these days I'm going to have to break down and go for a "ride" to hit one of these H I 's . Looks like a lot of fun

Matt,

I appreciate you sharing the fotos. I was there last year and had a great time.

That is an induction forge...

Kayne & Sons Induction Forge

The folks from Kayne & Sons were nice enough to show up with one of these for demo... I watched Don Fogg fall in love with it, and Burt Foster seemed to think it was one of the coolest things since Menudo. VERY expensive, but amazingly energy efficient, and FAST. Kevin Cashen and I heated up a 14" section of that 1/2" round stock in less than 20 seconds, for sure.

Yeah, that induction forge was quite the little toy. You could go from dead cold steel to orange in about 3 seconds, and get a 4-5" section hot and ready to forge in probably 10 seconds. And this is from a unit that requires no pre-heat and uses no power unless you're actually heating the steel. Even if you live in a place where electricity is high, I guarantee this thing still costs a lot less to operate than a propane forge.

Except that your forge is probably made from a paint can or some other thing you drug out of the dump and some plumbing parts you got a garage sale and this thing is, well, $4000.

The cool factor is certainly off the charts, though....

Seriously, it was not to be believed until I saw it. Mr. Kayne said that the guys that make his OC tongs for him use one, and they use it ALL day... their energy consumption broke down to 50 cents a day! No smell, no toxic to dangerous gases, no heat! You could forge in the bedroom (assuming you didn't get 'forged' for trying to forge in the bedroom, that is!).
