I met up with Sgt Art and Primitiveman off the forums here. Although Art was not able to stay he did bring my new Maxped Falcon II !!!!! I can't wait to do a review on that thing.

Primitiveman, me and his friend hit an 8 mile round trip section of the Batona trail in Batsto NJ in the Wharton State Forest. It turned out to be a great day and also allowed me to put my new Maxped Pygmy Falcon to use. I packed it up like I would for a full day trip so I can get an idea of how it would ride on my back... More on that in a different thread.

The forest was a Pine forrest and is earily quiet with very limited wildlife. I think we saw two squirrels and one bird... We actually saw more people then we did animals. One guy was walking the trail with his parrot on his shoulder... funny stuff.

The trails were hard pack sand and some of it was a little looser sand. There was quite a bit of controlled burn areas that were recently burned and some fire break lines I took pictures of as well.

This small platform was about 10-15 feet up a tree, we're trying to figure out what it may have been. Much too small for a hunting platform...

Nice shots Myright - I like the swamp. Beavers? Reminds me of eastern Ont a lot. Here is to some of that new growth!

A couple of quick knife pics :)

I really didn't get a chance to play with this guy as we were on the move most of the time. Great blade though - I'll post a review once I'm able to put her to hard use.

I'm not sure about that particular section, but I've done canoe trips on a nearby river and there were some beaver ponds around. I never did see a beaver though.

It's a pretty cool place and not something most people would think of when then they think of NJ.

Sorry that I was not able to make this one.
Looks like you guys had a great time.
Hopefully we will do some more of these local get togethers.

I know the B'Trail pretty well Myright, have hiked most of it in sections in the past few years. There was a time I would spend a month or so down in Wharton SF at a time, as the Superintendent is an aquaintence of mine from LBI. I did an inventory with him on the gypsy moth problem back a few years ago. Would'nt you know the State goes and cuts the budget for the spraying, and now the place is getting eaten alive by the Gypsy moths. Go figure!

Yeah, that place and the Batona trail is sugar sand heaven, tough hiking for those not in the know. Water is hard to find along the trail in places, but not the portion you were on. Pretty boring hiking if one goes in search of seeing much wildlife. In the right season though the Huckleberries and Blueberries are just so dense you can't stop to gorge on them! Some of my best eating along the trail has been down in Wharton/Lebanon SF.

If folks get down that way do yourselves a favor and drop into the visitor's center; they have plenty of info on the area and it's all free including maps. The campground in Wharton SF is a great place to camp in the right season, otherwise the skeeters will carry you off and the ticks will just distract you from the chiggers in your shins!

Yeah, most people outside of NJ think 'Newark, NJ' when they think of NJ, because it's always in the news:barf: You never hear about the nice places, like for instance the Count Basie Theatre here in Red Bank,NJ where the Man, Mr Johnny Winters is getting ready to rip it up:thumbup:

Yep, I'm not used to walking on sand for any length so I'm a bit sore today :o

Next time Sharp Eye - we'll all get together again. it was a good time.

:eek::eek:GASP:eek::eek: Thats AWESOME!!!

Thanks, bro. That's the blade that J Williams designed and Ray built. It's a great knife and feels very comfortable in my hands. I think I'm going to get a pocket sheath made for it so I can carry it in my front pocket.

It's a way cool blade though.

Great pics, and not something I would think of in NJ. The swamp reminds me of Crane Creek and Maumee Bay for some reason. (State Parks)

Cool pics. My wife is/was a Piney (Browns Mills) and I plan on getting in the woods in NJ this summer on our next visit.

Knives grow on trees in NJ? Getouddaheah!!! (NJ for "Get out of here" colloq. usage for slang term "You must be jesting with me.")

Saunterer - I learned what a Piney was yesterday, funny term :) Give a holler when your in town if you want to get together.

MBTull - Hells yeah they grow on trees, they also fall out of trees....

Ain't that the truth! They can get pretty bad at times. Deet becomes your friend. LOL
Glad you guys had fun, wish I could of made it.

Sure thing. My plan if we visit this summer is for my wife to drop me off somewhere in the pine barrens and leave me for the night. Might need some input where to do this so the Jersey Devil does not mess my night up. :D
