It been quite awhile since I have been able to get out. My wifes school schedule has put me into Mr Mom mode, all the while ballancing my crazy job 48hrs a week. Since she was off school today, I loaded up the truck, and me and my 11 yr old hit the road to go ot to the farm so he could shoot his .22/.410, and I could get some trigger time with my .45 and get my new woodsmonkey articles pictures done, and review my new Laconico, and play with my new forged Poll Hawk from KR Johnson.

So we loaded up the truck, and I grabbed a couple MREs from the 5 cases I have( I thought my 10yr old needed to experiance some formed beef pattys :D:barf:), and we set out on our adventure.

Everyone knows I am a huge fan of Ray Laconicos work. IMO he makes some of the best blades I have ever used. If you dont have one yet, you are missing out!!! This is my newest one. I designed this based on what knife I would want in a survival knife. Migh not be for you, but its not for you so...:p

This thing turned out great. Its like a cross between a cold steel master hunter and HWK+ with Rays flavor mixed in. I freakin LOVE this blade!!!! :D

Specs

-4.5in 3/16 O1 blade, 4.5in handle o' black micarta
-Thumb grooves on spine which throw a WICKED shower from my fire steel.
-Horizontal/vertical black leather sheath.

I figured what better way to get a feel for it then to build a fire for some heat and to make my kindasorta coffee from the MRE.

The knife sliced into wood like a dream. It would literally bite so deep it would shave chunks off the wood with ease!

Fuzzin out was no problamo for this knife.

The design of the handle provides a very sure grip. Locks the knife right in place.

hold your horses!! More to come!!

Another cool feature is the Tang extends around 1/8in to aid in hammring if need be.

I batoned the crap out of this blade. Every piece of wood I used for the Fire was batoned just for kicks. ;) It worked great. The grind lines of this knife and its 3/16 thickness made it wedge and split the wood with ease. Awesome.

It even opens MRE packets with ease!!!!:D

J - you make me crazy jealous with those Laconico blades you've got. I've only got the project W right now, but will be buying more. You're right that handle looks very comfortable like it just molds right to your hand. I tend to move my grip around a bit on the handle and that one looks to provide a good grip no matter how you chose to grip it.

Thanks for the pics bro - Good on ya for getting out too! I hear about Mr. Mom - my wife works weekends now since the kid so I'm not able to get out all that easily anymore.

The more and more I see his work the more I want one! whats the wait for one of his knives right now?

little range time after lunch. Heres my toys in their pants.

Anyways, that was my day. My boy burnt through 150rds of .22, and a half box of .410. He didnt want tohave pictures taken so I respected that.

I had some hawk pics, but they arent seemin to upload.

Oh well, I am gonna do a Revew with my forged hawk vs. my cold steel hawk soon!!

Thanks for lookin. I had fun, it was nice to get out.

Another thing, Those shoot N C targets are awesome!! Ive never used em before, I dont think I will go back to the paper and staple gun!! These are the smallest 5.5in targets. I figure I wanna put all my shots in a circle that small or smaller, so I went with these....

I do love me some Laconicos. :o Ive sold a few though, and kept only a couple. Im minimizing all of my gear down. I was getting way too much stuff built up that wasnt getting used.

Its rough huh? I wanna get out every day, but with the kids, and work, Its hard. I will have all the time in the world in another 2 months though. She will be COMPLETELY done with school finally, and will only work 3 12s a week at the hospital instead of being a full time student and full time LPN now.

The grip is great. Very simple and effective.

Im not sure, the best way to find out is to email Ray.

Looks like good shootin to me! Cool day.

Thanks man. I guess it isnt bad with the Targets only being 5.5in, but I am dissapointed in my groups. I need to get out more. I used to be able to keep em alot tighter when I shot every day. Its cool though, I still didnt use my sights for the close ones, just looked at the target. Used em for the 30yd shots though. :o

Great pics and excellent looking knife bro! Glad you used the th e.45 on the target and not the knife.

Also a great way to spend time with your boy!

Thanks man!

I am lovin it. If it was the only blade I owned, I would be fine. Gotta love the fact that we can get a knife made exactly the way we want from a whole variety of excellant makers with their own styles. Its awesome.

I enjoyed hangin with my boy. Its been awhile. He is a crack shot with that Rossi too!! Hes a great kid. Despite the fact that his real dad is as big of a POS that he is.

looks like a fun time. your boy is 11 and already shooting, thats pretty cool. kinda wish my mom was okay with the gun thing so my dad could learn me on it. oh well, i got my recurve for now, and thats loads of fun.

rays knives are pretty cool, the grinds look great, as does everything else. not really my typical style, but they are definatly nice from everything i have seen or read. looking forward to the 'hawk review.

Archery is a blast. I just got me a quiver, and pouch from Mike, to go with the dozen arrows and armguard I got from him awhile back. I havent got out with em yet, but I am gonna try to go fling some arrows this week.

My boy has been shootin guns since he was 5. My 4 yr old already shoots that Rossi too. Hes not good, but hes learning, and getting use to the noise and "kick" which I think is important.

The Hawk I have is very cool. Wait to you see it next to a cold steel hawk. Id say this is a cross between a hatchet and a hawk. It has a nice wedge shape, and the hawk look. Its great. I am gonna finish moddin it out, and post pics of the process, and a review/ shootout of the 2 hawks...

Sorry you havent been able to shoot, but you will have kids before you know it, then you can start em off right.

If you really want it to be your only blade, I can arrange that for you. You know I am always willing to help;)

Sorry to here that the boys real bio. father is a POS (Your his real dad)
But think of this way; if his Biological father wasn't a POS, you wouldn't be bedding the hottie;)

Well said brother!!! I cant complain. ;)

Hes just like me. Ive been his pops since he was 4, and his brother was 2. Before my son was born. We even share the same name!! How scary is that????

Looks like you had a great time Jake  Glad you were able to get out on a break with your boy. I'm with the others here: every time I see one of your Laconico knives, I start to unconsciously salivate... :D I need to pick me up one in the next year or two...

looks like you had a great day..especially with your son,,cant beat that :)

love the Laconico....:D

I'm actually doing the same. I'm VERY happy with the Project W and my new SDS Camp blade. I've also got a larger Becker and some folders that round out everything I need for anything I will get myself into.

I've got a couple of knives that I'm thinking about getting rid of but am putting off selling them until I know for sure.
