Just thought I'd share. Blade is about 4" long with a high, flat grind. 5/32" D-2 made by Madpoet. Finish work done by me... design is a fixed blade version of Bob Lum's Chinese Utility Folder with some changes, and Bob took the design from an ancient Mandarin one, so no copyright's were broken...

Black canvas Micarta handles (thanks, Kit!) with mosaic pins I made (brass and aluminum with red epoxy). The etching on the blade roughly says "Utility" in Chinese.

The etching was done crudely with candle wax and ferric chloride solution from Radio Shack:

I guess that's about as close as "utility" gets in Chinese.

BTW have you heard of the origin of "Gung Ho"? The WWII founder of the Marine Raiders spent sometime with the Chinese communist gurrillas and adopted their MO. He thought "Gung Ho" was the slogan for "Work Together", when it was really the acronym for "The Industrial Cooperative Society".

I didn't bother with a guard because:
a) It isn't part of the traditional pattern and
b) I don't go around stabbing stuff, ever. This is mainly a slicer, as you can see, and I have yet to ever have needed a guard to prevent hand slippage...

I'd love to see pics of that knife, Gary! Sounds like a beaut. Do you know where you could get a decent sheath for it?

I'd have to ask Madpoet for sure, but I believe the place that heat treats for him brings it up to 61-62 Rc, but I can't be sure on that. Pretty hard, but once I got the edge on there it sure stays!

That's the nice thing about being a sheathmaker...you're never far from a good one, replacement, whatever!

I was surprised to see your latest offering (Swiss Tool and Mag Lite combo)...I have been working on a modular sheath for a Surefire 3P and my Cetan Tanto!

Sort of like yours, but your tip drops just a little lower.
