Ok, finally got done modding of my EDC Muddy MS. It now sports a hand rubbed satin finish with a full flat ground blade and AD sized handle. Hence the Meaner Duty! Hope you guys like it.

Looks good man. I might have to drop off a MRS now. Were there alot of infi dimples in the steel after you took off the coating?

Ban: Excellent job. Did you remove the dimples by hand rubbing too? Did you remove the handles? No power tools? Sorry for all the questions but that looks superb! ;)

WOW, that looks great!

Very nice distal taper, and that hand rubbed satin is outstanding.

Wanna do mine? :D

gimmejr,

There were a ton of deep pits on mine. It even has really deep and long gouges as if someone took a angle grinder and skidded the grinding wheel across the flats.

Tyrkon,

I cheated and used a belt sander to get the dimples off the flats after removing the handle slabs. I estimate that it would have taken me at least 3hrs using 80grit sandpaper if I were to do it by hand just to remove the dimples from the flats. By the time you are done removing the the dimples the primary bevel would have shrunk down by 1/8-1/4 of an inch depending on how deep the pits are. I only hand sanded after removing the dimples and regrinding the primary bevels.

Getting that plunge area to look decent was the hardest part of the whole job. My cheapy grinder was very finicky about tracking properly so it made it much harder.

I'll only do yours if you do mine :p hahahaha...

Man, that thing looks great.

Wish I'd scored a muddy Meaner so I could send it to you. :D

Wow! Great job.
  • How does it slice?
  • How does the thinned profile hold up?
I was able to get an AD and a MRS, but I decided I'd sell the MRS because the handle hurt my hands. Nice to see that I can grind it the same as the AD.

It slices like a demon because the primary bevel is taken down to almost zero. I would be willing to bet that it would out slice 80-90% of the factory knives out there. The tip also penetrates soft targets with the best of them. But of course this all comes at the cost of strength and durability. It should hold up real well so long at it is not used as a prybar or for chopping nails and cinder blocks ;) But seriously though, it is plenty strong for all tasks that a small knife would be required to do.

I've talked with Tom Krein about reprofiling my AD. I was a little worried about having him put a real thin edge on it, but it sounds like I shouldn't be too worried :D

Woah! That thing looks great.

It would be cool to see how it mic's out now...

Tom Krein is a master grinder. You are in good hands so just relax ;)

xaman,

The spine right about the plunge area is .150 and gradually tapers down to .110 above middle of blade then finally .02 at the very tip.

I'm not worried about Tom's grinding abilities, I'm worried about asking for something too thin :) Since all the INFI I've seen has been THICK, I was worried that there might be a reason no one went thin. Now that I've seen it done, I can tell Tom to go to town.:D

   WOW

That turned out awesome... Very cool Ban!

What kind of belt grinder do you use?
