Pics of Wharncliffes

Just purchased/received off the Exchange. One of just a few wharncliffe bladed knives in my collection.

I think blade designers/manufacturers just don't know what to call the new designs.
Especially seax/k-tip designs that are just designated Wharncliffe.
It's either laziness or marketing. Probably a little of both as most folks, even knife folks, don't know what a seax is.
Come to think of it, the seax probably influenced Wharncliffe when he designed the blade.
I totally agree, not enough reference to Seax, almost like people think that shape started with Wharncliffe.

As for what to call a new blade shape, a YT'r put it best when he said - just put the word "modified" in front of it then you can, pretty much, use whatever word ya want.

The dude has a point. Heck, you could call my Yojumbo a "modified tanto"...... modified in the sense it is upside down lol

I still only have one Wharncliffe, no sense posting a pic, looks just like every other Yojumbo...... for now! I've been tempted to get ahold of Hilltop, that guys can do cool things to 'em.

JParanee JParanee Joe, what is the handle material on the one marked "Aldrich"?

Thanks!

Thanks for asking for wharny pics! I love the wharncliffe blade shape. It is my favorite one, and what got me into knives in the first place. My first "obsession knife" was a CRKT Minimalist Wharncliffe. I long since lost it, but I never lost the love for wharnies; indeed it has grown, even to the point where many of the knives I make to this day are built around my love for the great utility of this simple blade shape. Please excuse the varyingpic sizes, and also I made some of these more than a year ago, before I had come up with a maker's mark and a way to apply it.

Here are some pics:

A yardwork seax in 1084 I made for a gentleman last year according to his specs. I think we sort of alternated between the term seax and reverse tanto when we were first discussing it, and by the time it was built we ended up with more of a pointy sheepsfoot. To me it falls into the same general category of straight edged knives.

This one probably fits the definition better, though:

At the time I made these two, I was calling it the "Barong Seax" design, to indicate the hybridization of elements of a barong handle and seax blade.

It has evolved a few times, as has the name. It is now the Barax machete (pronounced Bar - Axe, sort of a shorter version of barong seax, and kind of funny too because it is kind of like an axe shaped like a bar lol).

And of course, there are the real wharncliffes, can't forget those!

I named this one "Wharndiculous" because the blade is about one and a half inches "too long", but I figured there might be someone out there who wants something cRAzY like that.

This one was my personal EDC I made for myself until I sold it as a user last year:

Well only allowed 10 uploads per post so I figured these would do.

Thanks for asking, and thanks for looking!

I don’t know where to start. The Wharncliffe is a specific shape. A lot of them shown are definitely not Wharncliffes, but that’s ok.

it’s odd to me that there is no name (that I’m aware of) for all of the straight edged blades as a group. I guess they are all a modified Seax?

When you think of it in this Seax family of blades. The straight edge stays the same and it’s the spine that changes.

Seax sheepsfoot lambsfoot coping rope knife Wharncliffe all have the same straight edge with different spines. Even the Stanley utility blade falls into this family.

If you’ve never wrapped your fist around a Tuff Lite, you should find one in a shop and give it a fondle. One of my all-time favorites.

I just got these two as gifts for a couple of buddies that work in maintenance.

Not a fan of the huge new logos/branding, but the edges came with a nice acute grind.

The blackwash one on the bottom was my first Kershaw, and my first knife over $15. Also, first assisted, I thought they were the $h!t at first, like I found a loophole around the Auto-ban lol long time ago

I have the CF version around somewhere too, that one is super light weight….I contemplated getting the orange KC version in S35VN, but honestly I like bigger knives now. If they were like 3.5”
Instead of 3” I’d get one in a minute.
