Pics OF XM-18 Re-Profiled Mirror Edges?

I don't think that it is an edge pro, there are little things that are not right about it, and I did a quick search on the bay and I think I found that exact sharpener shipping straight out of china.

He posted that it was a no name sharpener off ebay. ;)

No name. Bought it cheap from ebay. Looks similar to Apex, but I do not have one to compare with. The hones which it came with were no good and I had to do some mods and custom fitting for it to be able to accept the DMT hones. It works well now.

I know he said that but then a few people alluded to the fact that it was an edge pro, just wanted to make sure people didn't buy one thinking the knock off was the real thing. The comment was not really directed towards the Gress.

Gress it looks like an Edge Pro?. Those are very good systems as well.

2. What changes exactly did you make to accomodate the DMT hones if you don't mind. I'd buy one if evilbay has a vendor selling them on the cheap. Got any pics of results?

Thanks for looking out for us man - I know what it was and since he's never posted back what he did to modify it for use with the DMT stones or shown us an example of the work it did. One can only assume he buggered up a knife on it! :D :D

OK. once more- this is not an Edge Pro. Bought on ebay from a seller in Canada. Have no clue where it is made in though.
I do not have or know enough about Edge Pro to make a good guess on how exactly Edge Pro is different and what Edge Pro advantages over this one are. The weak points of this one are somewhat shaky construction (if you use it for heavy fixed knives like I do) and as I said the quality of the hones it came with. The mods I did were all related to the stone holder as I wanted to use it with DMT diamond stones. it was a bit weak for the 6" DMT stones and the openning was too wide to hold a 4" DMT stones. Mods were filing down/re-profiling plastic holder lips and longer tubing for correct sizing of the holder for shorter stones. All of these will be quite obvious to you if you decided to get this one and use it with DMT diamond stones.
Here is one example of sharpening of my heavy user Mule using this set-up.

At this point I am satisfied with what I get from this set-up and do not see a need to go elsewhere. ;)
For those who afraid of buggering a knife with this set up I advise to go with an Adge Pro or use a professional sharpener :D

I had a feeling my last post might get a reply from you :D

Nice job on that Mule Gress - looking really nice and even on the bevel.

I knew what you meant brotha. ;) you made it clear enough when you said it was a "no name. Bought it cheap from eBay". Don't see where the confusion is coming from. Either way. Bad ass looking edge for a no name sharpening system !! Nice work!

I've yet to master the skill of sharpening a blade. Working at it though!

Thank you guys. I did not realize how close to the Edge Pro this no name sharpener looks. Now as I checked the Edge Pro a bit more I see where the confusion is coming from :) And yes it does not mirror polish the bevel but just puts the nice even edge on it. To mirror polish one needs to go through just that - mirror polishing with very fine paste and/or a leather strop. I do not see a need to doing this on my users.

Rick, with your skills of opening a flipper blade (which I watched 199 times :)) left alone shooting with Rick during a drill you posted you should not worry about sharpening :)

ATony- If you wouldn't mind. I have my XM-18's and ordered the same set-up you have from W.E.
I know I'd appreciate it and it goes to the OP and some follow-up posts, if you would briefly bullet the steps you went thru on your XM-18.
Thanks
Rubi

atony-did you maintain a setting on the Wicked Edge of 18 degrees all the way to the tip? I just got a Wicked Edge and was wondering how users were doing their spanto tips.
Thanks
Peter

Off track for a post here: at another online hangout, XM-18 sharpening was discussed. Those guys were all using a Spyderco Sharpmaker at he 40* inclusive setting on the blade and the 30* inclusive setting on the spanto tip.

Some, like myself were stropping them after each day of use. I have a couple of systems (not the WEPS) but I worry about dinging my XM-18. We've all probably seen a picture or two of a butchered XM-18! :barf:

Does anyone "mask" there blades when using guided sharpening?

Waiting for Atony to chime in again. :)

I just got mine and am no authority on them, but have read a # of threads.
Seems that you do not need to tape with Wicked edge, if you clean the vice after each use to get out any metal particles/grit. It is highly recomended that you tape when using the edge pro. That said it can never hurt to tape.

I did'nt do anything special. I used the top holes for the depth, locked her down as by the instructions. I did only sharpen one side at a time as I progressed through the different stones. Just take it nice and easy and you should not have any problems.

I did practise on a few Spydie's before I had the courage to throw the XM in there. I would suggest first time users do the same, just to get the feel of it.

Peter,

Yes I followed the 18* all the way out to the tip. It made it one heck of a slicer. I don't think you are compromising the strength of the Spanto tip by knocking it down a few degree's, IMHO.

I never masked the blade on any of the knives i've sharpened on the WickedEdge, I do infact clean it out after every use and i'll even wipe some of the excess off while sharpening. I use a soft rag and wipe the blade down (while mounted) when I change stones.

Thanks atony
Even though I think I understand the system,I plan to start with the kitchen knives and work my way up to my XM. Rick has enough work without fixing my screw ups.

Thanks to Cziv and Atony for the OP and detailed information very much appreciated.

angle.. a little less than at what I got it.. don't know, freehand sharpened.
I'm not sure anymore, it was some time ago, either waterstones or dmt diamond stones, then the strops. I think i posted these in maintenence tinkering and embellishment too, I guess that info is somewhere there too. I'll look it up

Beautiful edge man! I used the sharpmaker on my XM-18 and was very dissatisfied with the edge I got and pulled out the diafolds and went at it freehand. I finished with the xx-fine dia-fold, then 2 micron, 1 micron and .5 - so I still have some cloudiness and some scratch marks on my bevel but it's like a scalpel.

I didn't trust the magna-guide because I couldn't clamp on a straight line, due to the nature of the blade spine's drop.

It looks like I'm going to have to spring for the higher micron DMT pastes, as I'm sure I'm moving down too abruptly in my compounds. Great job!

BTW, have you ever done SEO work? You're a serious deep linker. I must have had 4 windows open from following the links in your posts! :D
