1. A few days before leaving Camp Shelby, MS.

2. My first full day of work, at Guard Mount, three days ago.

3. View of village from tower.

4. View of village from landing. Standing on landing rail. Hoping not to catch a bullet, because then I would feel stupid.

Hope y'all enjoy. Because of some of the distances involved, I'm considering eventually getting an optic with some magnification. My M68 CCO (Aimpoint red dot) is a great close-range optic, but has no magnification, and there are lots of potential shots out there in the 300-600 meter range.

Good! You're the real great man. I hope that you love all the Afghanistans whom you can meet there. But don't forgive the terrorists like Taliban shit-dogs. Good luck!

Good to see you John. I hope you are well. E-mail if you need ANYTHING at all, sir. You already know that though. If possible, can you explain what you mean when you say there are 'lots of potential shots' out there. If not, ignore me.

Watcherass bro. Constant prayers coming your way from Atlanta.

Darn. Just a kid. I know I know....you're the accomplished man, gunnie, khuk nut, thinker, poet.....and a kid.
Love that wire. STop the rocks?

Scene looks like Trona California otherwise....

Stay safe John. My prayers count even if there is no God in your universe.
because I say so

Andy, I mean a lot of the places I would be set up in- if I were an adversary with a distance rifle- it would be nice to have a scope to deal with. Shadowy doorways, stuff like that.

Yeah, say I'm taking fire from "only" 220 meters away. If that were the case, and the shooter is in shadow, it'd be nice to have some magnification so I could aim for more than the muzzle flashes, y'know? That may not be likely...I don't know. The conflict over here seems to be heating up again, after being lower-key for a while.

Glad y'all liked the pics. I jumped onto the landing, took the one pic as quickly as possible, and scurried on down the ladder.

munk, actually, there are a lot of rocks. There are kids 15 yards away from one of the towers. They throw rocks at everything, dogs, buildings, each other. I actually get a warm feeling when you call me a kid. Always makes me feel like family. :)

Oh- one of the towers spotted a body fairly close to the wire today. Evidently, he died while smoking opium, and someone just dragged him into the rest of the trash.

A while ago, I was on top of the building at the entrance to Camp Phoenix, assisting with a detail to lower, then raise the FLIR. It was dusk, just starting to really get dark, and I turned at a flash of light, in time to catch the flare pattern bursting from a C-130 flying away. Beautiful.

So, that's what it's like being here. Hours in body armor and kevlar, and movies projected twice a week on the firehouse wall. It ain't heaven, but it's still far from hell, so far.

...and I just discovered there are no clothes hangers in the PX. What the hell? I guess there are a lot of things we just take for granted, you know?

Sort of the meaning of all dressed up and no place to go.

Take care of yourself and don't buy any tourist Khuks!

ps ...send more pics

You need clothes hangers bro? Gimme an address. What kind you want?

Here's the address John gave in his previous thread:

John, please advise if this is no longer accurate.

Hey John?

All I can find around here is WHITE gb cable ties in that length. Will they do? I can call folks in some other towns and see if they can come up with BLACK ones.

Lemme know if you get a chance.

Thanks.

Specialist,

I am a soldier here in Phoenix, Az. I'm a reservist with an Intel BN. E4, but I am putting in my Packet this week for E5.

I wish you the best. I am sure I will be there sometime in the next 12 months.

I am currently on 18 month COTTAD orders here at home.

Keep your head down and your powder dry.

I am poor but some one needs to pony up here for a decent 2-9 variable power scope and some riser rings for My boy here! We are only talking like 50-100 bucks. If everyone just put in a few bucks... we could get this kid some KILLS er.. I mean a scope! :>

John? I have one of these on the RishAR-15:

http://www.valdada.com/vn/ior/03b

They're fairly small, fairly light, and Combloc unbreakable. 4x is low enough that shorter ranged shooting can still be done if necessary. They are available with the BDC set for the M855 load, although mine seems to track with a 20" barrel and would be a bit off with the M4. I prefer the Dragunov reticle myself.

Unfortunately, when I bought mine a few years back they were only $300. I guess that the word finally got out. A less expensive recommendation would be Leupold's 1-4x (the very scope that I have on my 45-70, actually) which might be a better choice for your neck of the woods. You'll save a few hundred and I can't think of a better range of magnification. The 1x setting seems to be a bit higher than 1x on mine, but it's close enough that it still serves as an improvised reflex sight at its lowest setting.

I do have a spare Trilux laying around with a 5.56mm cam installed. The tritium element has long since died and been removed but it has an LED replacement. It's set up for a Weaver mount. I would be willing to loan it out. (Got some 3-9x Tasco's as well but they're not worth the shipping. I'd be willing to give those away.)

Should you find yourself needing something, ask.

I can get a 2x7 Nikon scope for a great price through work if you need one John. Just say the word.
