Pics, some from A-Stan

Eric,

That will still reach me, but I have been "handed down" to 180th Infantry. This address will now reach me even faster:

John R. Shirley
HHC 1/180th INF, 41ST BCT
Camp Phoenix
APO, AE 09320

Azis,

Will when I can. Currently, I have to download, then resize, then post to a host. Net is slow here, and I can only get online in 30min increments.

Andy,

Thanks, but I think Byron's got me covered, on that. :)

Kis,

White is just fine, thanks.

AZs:

Good luck w/ the board.

Dave, Kurt,

Thanks for the suggestions. I'm going to do a little research. I was thinking that perhaps I might either go for a magnification unit to attach to my Aimpoint, or perhaps get an Trijicon Accupoint 3-9x scope.

Rob,

Good to be able to spend time w/ y'all. I missed ya. :D

John

They'll go out today.

And, because you've been SO good doing your chores, I'll include a bar of white chocolate that a friend gave from some Portland boutique.

As more of us are saying these days: "wacherass."

Interesting that they use shipping containers.

There is a company here in Sacramento that makes all kinds of stuff for the military(and anyone else with the money) out of shipping containers. They mare ER rooms, communications, etc. Just tell them what you want and they will modify it and wire it to go. Just ship and drop it and it's ready to go.

Pretty slick idea.

John? I have one of these on the RishAR-15:

They're fairly small, fairly light, and Combloc unbreakable. 4x is low enough that shorter ranged shooting can still be done if necessary. They are available with the BDC set for the M855 load, although mine seems to track with a 20" barrel and would be a bit off with the M4. I prefer the Dragunov reticle myself.

Unfortunately, when I bought mine a few years back they were only $300. I guess that the word finally got out. A less expensive recommendation would be Leupold's 1-4x (the very scope that I have on my 45-70, actually) which might be a better choice for your neck of the woods. You'll save a few hundred and I can't think of a better range of magnification. The 1x setting seems to be a bit higher than 1x on mine, but it's close enough that it still serves as an improvised reflex sight at its lowest setting.

I do have a spare Trilux laying around with a 5.56mm cam installed. The tritium element has long since died and been removed but it has an LED replacement. It's set up for a Weaver mount. I would be willing to loan it out. (Got some 3-9x Tasco's as well but they're not worth the shipping. I'd be willing to give those away.)

Should you find yourself needing something, ask.

Dave, that's a nice scope, and 4X24 is a good compromise. Even at the new higher price it seems like a good deal to me. You walked away with it for $300. I have a 4X32 ACOG on mine, but sometimes wish for slightly more magnification. They have gone up in price as well since I got it about 10 years ago.

John,

Where's your kukri??

Man, they'll give you a rifle, but no scope! A belt, but no knife! :D

Always glad to see you posting. All said and done, I hope it is really boring over there for you. As boring as that may be...

IT looks like these people live in mud forts. It is a weird culture.
I remember reading an old Gund Digest from the '80s. There was an article about a family in A-stan that made rifles using very primitive faciltities - like in a hut. I don't know how they did it, but there was also a photo of a 5-year old holding a rifle that the family made.

These people live for war! They are started off early in life, and don't seem to know much else. The fighting has gone on there forever.
