Picture of the Bruce and Bruce colaberation Bowie!!!!

Yes George Bruce B. did do the Basket weave Mosaic Damascus.I thought it turned out really cool...
So cool infact that I am in the process of making myself a small 20 ton air press so I can weld the mosaic Damascus myself...
Bruce

Bruce E. Why are you going with air??? If it is ram speed my hydraulic goes at 2" per second.
Bruce B. That was the tube welded with the powdered 1084 ???
What size tube and any helpful hints to past on???
Buddy, old pal of mine.

Yeah, ol buddy who left me standing on the corner twice, it is a 1.5 x1.5 x 4" square tube with 1084 and 15n20 and powder 1084. Pack it in tight and put a piece of cardboard in both ends and weld the lid on. Forge it at 2300 extra long. Four it and reweld dry this time, four it again draw it to about 7" long, anneal twice and accordian cut. Piece of cake.

George,I am just building a small press like the jewelers press's.I only want it to weld the Damascus under and pattern it.I can get a twenty ton air hydraulic jack and air compresser for under 2 hundred dollars and I already have the 1 inch plates ready and waiting for the slide bars to arrive. This may sound strange but I will use this to weld under and then stretch the bar under the power hammer.Maybe someday I will get a big press made.I am just wanting to cut out some variables when welding up billets.Plus I can use it to press metal sheaths and buttcaps on also..And the price is doable at this time..
Bruce

That I can do,George..It will be a couple of weeks before I get to Alex's shop to get to put it all together. He has some of the parts and I have some,He is wanting to build one also for his sheath pressing..
It will look like the one Chris Crawford made from rail road tie plates only it will have 1 inch thick plates and instead of his 12 ton hand jack Mine will have a 20 ton air hydraulic..
If you have the Rio Grande jewelers supply catalog they have pictures of there Bonny Doone Press in a hand jack version or a porta power version both at 20 tons they also have a 50 ton one..These fit on a table top and are slick for a small shop..Like I said before I will stretch the Damascus with the 50 Little Giant and only weld and pattern with this press.
I have a 20 ton hand jack version now that I use for the metal sheaths,When I seen the one Chris made I started to laugh.I had the same thing allready made but I was using it as a anvil base. When I seen it come in the scrap yard I brought it home to mount my portable anvil on,And had threatened to cut the center plate out a million times. Now it is back to being a press like it was originally designed for..
Better quit I am writing to much here..
Bruce

George here is a picture of the hand jack press I use to press the metal sheaths now.I am making one like this only with the air hydraulic for welding.I don't figure it will be any good for stretching a bar but it will do good at patterning a bar and welding..
Bruce

George,With a piece of urethane boxed in a steel box and a blade pattern you could use that to press out Nickel silver sheaths and the throat and tips also.Ten ton is a little light for that but if you have a 20 ton one you can do them easy..
If you are interested I will get a picture of the uretane set up and send you so you wil know what i am talking about. That way if you ever wanted to do the metal sheaths or pressed buttcaps like the old antiques you could..
Bruce

I have some NS sheaths to make either the end of the week or the first of next week so I will take pictures of the whole process and send it to you guys or make a tutorial out of it..
Bruce

Thanks Bruce.
You may get an e-mail from a guy (Robert Hankins)

let me know if he does or doesn't.
I hope you don't mind?

No problem Dan,I am supposed to be helping him with his book anyway,My part will be about forging..
