Pictures of earned patinas

Howard, as good of an account of a nice blade as I have read. Thanks

View attachment 558605My JKM-1 has developed a bit of patina doing kitchen duty. It's usually shellacked in lamb grease which has protected it to a degree. I try to only clean it with water and a cloth unless it gets really nasty

The angle and lighting of the bolster in the top pic causes the bolster to appear to have been milled out of solid bar stock. Looks impressive.

Great pix and post, thank you for sharing, Howard

I think I still have a dozen or so khukuris, and not one of them has a decent patina.

Here's a KKarda with a good one though. Reground by Dan Koster, it now sports a full grind. Much better cutter. Interestingly enough the patina seems to have brought out its temper line. You might be able to see it if you look closely.

Nice KK Kamagong! That must have lightened it up considerably. Mr. Koster does some fine work. I have a little skinner that he made long ago that is a companion knife with a Bura AK Bowie.

Yesterday was not a good day in Corn Patch. The sun was out. The birds were singing. The thermometer read 100 degrees and humidity felt at least that high.

[/IMG] Little Bookie was planting trees and shrubs and the the tall, green nasties were falling like flies to an aggressive Kesar Lal. With the nasties defeated, the little khuk was laid down and the water hose brought out. Then the wife came out and said my Step-Mom was in a bad way in Hospice. I hurried the job and went to visit. Upon returning home about 5 hours later, I went out back to pick up my things and put them away. Just answered the phone while typing this and my Step-Mom just passed away.

Picked up my khuk and this is what I found.

[/IMG] A bit rusty, eh? The heat and high humidity did me a number. Decided to darken what Mother Nature blessed me with, so I spent most of the day wetting it down and leaving it in the sunshine. Turned out like this.

[/IMG] The "patina" is a rather plum looking brown and sort of even, so I oiled Kesar up and added a shot of wood oil to the handle as well. Kesar is my worker and the only issue I have with most HI blades in my possession is that the handles are all about 1/2" to 3/4" too long for me.

[/IMG] You'll notice an angled finger groove in the handle to fit my right forefinger exactly. This locks the handle in position for me and is a big assist when it comes to cutting saplings and brush. See you all later. I've got things to attend to.

Bookie:

Sorry to hear about your step mom. Our condolences to you and your family.
