Did the coating come off without sanding?

Possible alternatives to electrical tape: hockey tape (a woven fiber tape sorta like coach's athletic tape) or tennis racket grip tape (very thin foam covered with fake leather).This handle (Cold Steel Barong Machete) is not particularly grippy. I wrapped it in electrical tape and roughened it up a little with sandpaper. The butt is quite grippy though: the hook at the end makes it virtually impossible for you to release the knife accidentally while you are chopping.
