I was going to hike around the base of Elden Mountain in Flagstaff, AZ. I didn't bring a compass, and didn't have a map. Bad move. The hike turned out to take a different route than I planned...

I came across a trail and decided to follow it.

It went up. I didn't want to go up. But I went up.

I hit a road that I decided to follow, just so I knew where I was

I found a skull. What animal is this?!?!? It doesn't look like a rabbit because of the pointed teeth. It doesn't look like a cat skull, such as mountain lion or bobcat. I am going to guess coyote, though it looked quite small to be a coyote.

And that's what I came from

Sqeezymo,

Cool pics.. Never fun to be without a map and compass, is it? BTW, what kind of burrito is that?

Geez, don't ever forget the map and compass in unfamiliar territory or we'll be reading stuff about your hike that we don't want to. :(

Glad it turned out all right. Good pictures, too.

It was a bean and cheese burrito from one of my college's crappy restaraunts, but since I was hungry as heck it was delicious.

And yeah I realized it was a bad idea to not bring a compass and map after the first 20 minutes of hiking. But fortunately, I have hiked the area before, and if I did get lost, I just knew that all I had to do was head back to the base of the large mountain I was circling. Fortunately, one of the trails I followed lead to a trail head, which had a map on it. So I just snapped a bunch of photos of it with my digital camera and used that as my map :D

It's hard to ID the skull without a size reference but looks like Mink/Polecat or if it's larger than those then maybe a Fox ?

Yeah it was about 4 inches long. So possibly? I haven't seen any in the area though.

Oh and the area I was in was Elden Mountain. I managed to hike up to the TV towers

Great pictures, thanks for posting them, Squeezymo. I love viewing other people's day hike pics.

That is exactly what it is......... CHUPACABRA! Alert the authorities and hide the goats!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was going to guess fox but pitdog beat me to it. Looks like a good time, albeit unnerving when you get misdirected...Good plan sticking with the road when you came across it.
