Hi guys,

I've been reading up on hawks and their uses and advantages. I'm naturally a kukri man myself by inclination and culture -- being a Brit the kukri has been in my consciousness since I was very young. But I'm quite keen to get a CS Trail Hawk and have a bit of fun modding it.

This seems like a very popular thing to do and certainly looks fun, but don't seem to have seen nearly as many of pics of people actually using their hawks as I have of them making them look pretty.

So, here I am looking to pander to my own confirmation bias. Please can I see all your pics of carving, shelter building, whittling, skinning, splitting etc etc

Thanks in advance guys

No one has any pics??

I was gonna get all excited and click purchase on a CS Trail Hawk, but if no one actually uses hawks, then maybe I'll just stick to my Kuks!

(I'm just kiddin')

With the noble exception WJC01, it looks like you're right Square Peg! Very dissapointing.... looks like I'll stick to my 100+ year old Gurkha Kuks!

Chopping comparison, trail hawk, GB wildlife, and Ka-Bar kukri. My hawk chops awesomely well.

Thanks for that guys, restoring my faith in the hawk lol...

IA Woodsman, thanks for that -- it was your youtube video that made me want the trail hawk so badly!

Shortwinger (Bill, if I may?), your a kuk man aren't you? You're on the Tora forum too? Wood you mind letting me know the pros cons of your kuks vs hawks? It would be great to get your perspective because most people seem to think a kukri machete is the same thing as a kukri when they compare the two.

joshiecole,

Yes I like the kukri as well as the hawks and I am finding it difficult to pick a favorite between the two. I think you will find several other "kukri guys" on this forum.

I think it is fair to say the best of the dedicated chopping kukri will probably out chop the best hawk by a slim margin. While the kukri can pound with its spine the tomahawk with a hammer pole out paces the kukri by a country mile. But then again as a cutting tool the kukri would beat out the hawk by that same margin. The hawk is easier to pack because you can break it down and fit it almost anywhere. I also like that you can repair the handle of the hawk in the field and I sometime struggle with the fact that most kukri would be very hard to fix in the field.

I like the versatility of both the hawk and kukri and they both do well enough at most tasks to be considered very good all-arounders. I guess it boils down to this; when you have both available which one do you go to most often? So far [[[for me]]] they are both neck and neck and I am enjoying putting them through their paces.

My meager SOG Fasthawk with reshaped spike. Slayer of mequite trees and desert shrubs!
Deadly to all things "scrubby", and piercer of plywood. $100 worth of fun for 20 bucks!

IA Woodsman,

If I rigged a hawk to cut through the ice like that, I'd run a loop of cord through the eye.

Tie it off to the stick.

Just for luck.
