My nieghbor had this laying around, and loaned it to me. I'm curious about the company. It appears to be nice stuff, although the chopper is a p.i.t.a to get free from the sheath. The tang stamp says W66 which apparently reflects the year made. Any info would be nice.

Western Cutlery has been gone for a long time as I understand, I have a Western knife similar to the one in the pic & my father has the W49 Bowie, These are good knives, better hang on to that combo ! You can find them on ebay sometimes . Here is my Western ( this was my Grandpa's hunting knife )
The sheath he had made with his initials on it.

You should post this in the Camillus collectors forum. I am sure you will get a bunch of info there. That is a nice set. Doug

Western was a company in the Case family, they made their own knives until sometime in the 1980s,then Camillus made them into the 1990s.I believe the w66 is a model number not the year.I also believe it was a set made in the 1950s or 1960s.Like others have said,if you post it in the Camillus forum or BRLs forum,I'm sure you can get a better history. If your neighbor ever finds out what it's worth in that condition,he'll probably want it back.

I used to have a western skinner when I was a kid. I bought it early 90's so I'm sure it was the camillus version. Cheap ( to buy) but it took on heck of a lot of abuse with the only damage being a pen head sized chip on the handle. It was a little different version, slight drop point and flat grind. Great using knife.

Ok, thanks for the replies. Info on the 'net was minimal. I'd started here because everyone loves gear porn. lol.

I have a set very close to the set you posted. The hatchet is the same but the knife is a bit smaller. I still have several Western Knives, all well worn.

Nice!
Those Hatchet/knife combos are sweet!

By the way W66 is the model number.

I'm not an expert but Western was a separate company unto itself but in the 80's (maybe even earlier in the 1970s) was bought by Coleman. Then Coleman sold it. Last off Camillus owned Western up until Camillus went belly up.

I have two Western Bowie W49's, a L46-5 and a 648A.
Also just before Christmas i bought 4 funky looking unfinished (Rusty/untempered/unground) 648A blanks on Ebay.
They are in my project box awaiting my attention.
:D

when i grew up this combo was the bees knees, every boyscout dreamed of the axe/knife combo. western made some great knives. it is a piece of american history.
