A couple of months ago I purchased a small older heat treat oven off ebay for a song. It's in good operating condition, but uses an older pyrometer type heat control. I plan on using this oven for a tempering oven and possibly to heat treat some blades. It's 120v but the chamber is 4x4x12 so it heats up fairly quick.
I'm going to get a pid controller and ssr to regulate the temp. To do this couldn't I just unhook the power cord from the oven and hook it to the ssr, then make a run from the ssr back to the power supply, and leave the oven temp control on high. The rest is pretty straight forward.
Thanks

That is exactly what you do. You set the oven on high, and have the PID turn the SSR on and off. You don't even need to cut the power cord, just wire a socket to the SSR, and plug in the oven. That way you can control any 120V device that has a plug. One controller....many uses.

Thanks guys, I ordered the PID and SSR with heat sink today. Can't wait to get this old boy wired for consistant heat. It's going to make a great tempering oven, and save some wear on my larger oven. Stacey that's a great idea about the plug, I believe that will be exactly how I do it.

That's how I do it, actually I have my PIDs in their own boxes with the SSRs in their own boxes with outlets. I can mix and match whether I want my single temp PID or my programmable hooked up to the 20 amp PID or the 60 amp I am getting for my pottery kiln

You didn't mention the thermocouple and thermocouple well. You will need them, too. Also, the thermocouple is connected to the PID with a special wire, called thermocouple wire.
