hello all,

looking at buying a new pid controller for electric kiln. Is there much difference from the 40 dollar ebay ones and the 100 dollar ones from omega? I am always leary of cheap items and figured some1 here has gotten these from ebay and have tryed them out. I know the ones from omega have many more ramp/soak options. the metals i have been using are o1, 5160 and 52100. Havent gotten to much into the 52100 yet still playing. The ones on ebay from coldfusion x are available locally to me at around 40 dollars otheriwse i have to add shipping cost also to any online orders. thanks for any /all advice.

Hello Dakota,

I've used several controllers from Auber Instruments. Here is a link to the one I currently use for an electric heat treat oven that I built. Cost is $90 --> http://auberins.com/index.php?main_...s_id=4&zenid=4e40297fb37fd0431156427b96d4372a

If you do not need ramp/soak options you can use this one for $35--> http://auberins.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=1&products_id=14

I use the cheaper one for my gas forge, just to monitor temperature but could have easily used it for the electric HT oven. Both work great. Whatever you get, be sure that it can be powered with the same voltage as your wall outlet. Both of these units can be powered from 20~260VAC/50~60Hz or 20-360 VDC. Some units can only be powered from a 12VDC source and require a seperate power supply. Hope this helps.

Eric, did your controller come with a good instruction manual? I have heard that a lot of people have trouble with the cheap E-bay controllers because the instructions are badly translated.

Yes, came with very good manuals. Send me an e-mail if you would like to have .pdf copies of the manual to look at.
