This is one knife that I have never forgotten since I saw it in a Blade Magazine many years ago. IIRC, there were very few made at $20,000 each. To me, it is one of the most beautiful custom knives ever created. Simple elegance. Just wanted to give it the spotlight one more time. :)

Was the knife made in house or did a maker make these for H & H ?

Pierre Reverdy of France is the maker. There's a section on Pierre in David Darom's Book "Custom Fixed-Blade Knives" (pg.220).
His "The Link" an ivory and damascus Dagger including a sculpture/stand by his wife Nicole was by far the most expensive offering at the AKI this year at $43,000. His website: http://www.reverdy.com/pages/indgalerie.htm

This knife and a select few others have really inspired me through the years. Every time it comes to designing, I consult this knife. Simple brilliance. I hope this work of art influences all makers and knife lovers everywhere.

That IS an exquisite knife....but $20,000 ??? Perhaps it is because of whom it was made by? Pierre Reverdy does some amazing work with steel.

I noticed that offering in the AKI catalog by the Reverdy's. The metal sculpture didn't seem to go with the knife AT ALL! The knife looked VERY nice but the sculpture had a rustic, impressionist look to it.

Does anyone know if it sold?

As far as I know, Pierre made this knife for H&H as a one-of-a-kind. To understand that price, you have to figure out the damascus. I'll try to find some pictures for your understanding. This was an actual "tour de force" and Pierre still is the only one able to forge this kind of damacus (which he calls "poetic damascus").

Peter, I asked the next day and was told it did not sell.

Well I didn't find the actual pictures but here's another one, with almost the same damascus pattern. Pierre included in the damascus a Holland & Holland pattern, which they used in their engraving. In order to get that very fine pattern, Pierre cut two pieces of steel with a special industrial machine, and then forged them.

Here's another knife with almost the same pattern and with the initial steel billet.

He was one of the pioneers in using wire-EDM to create figural Damascus....

This knife "Volute", made in 2001, was first published in my book
"Art and Design in Modern Custom Fixed-Blade Knives" (2003).
Below is the full page illustration I created for the book.

All the best,
David Darom (ddd)

Putting yourself on the internet is like herpes....it always comes back, it is always painful.;):D;)

that has GOT to be quoted- at least once!

Obviously, I have a little familiarity with Pierre's work.;)

The top knife shown by the OP has a real timeless and classic design which is kicked up by awesome steel.

IMO, the ivory handled knife that Dr. Darom posted is not nearly as approachable and aesthetically pleasing due to design....which is something that Pierre does very often.....on one hand, he is to be commended for following his muse, on the other hand, he often makes very unattractive knives.

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

I agree. The man is able to make the most gorgeous damascus you can imagine, and is one of the most gifted bladesmith in the world. I do have two skinners from him, but they are users. Too much brain, too much sense to be discovered, too much stories in his art-knives...
