Pilot Survival Knife Sheath Question

I have a Camillus Pilot Survival Knife I bought new in abut 1963 or 1964 (purchased it from an ad in the back of Boys Life Magazine). It has the leather sheath with no metal tip. All the sheaths I saw issued in the military had the metal tips. Sometimes you see both with and without metal tips in the PX and other stores.

Question: When did the metal tip sheath originate? Was it originally designed or requested by the military?

Mine has a light blue/gray epoxy on the pommel and is blade marked, 5 inch, etc. Anything special about it or is it quite common of that era?

Thanks in advance.

Bruce,
Yup, the metal backing for the Pilot's Survival knife was added at the request of the military for saftey. I'm not sure when, and I'm not sure about the coloring on the pommel, but we should have you a answer soon.

Stay tuned....
