I got one of these recently from here.

EDITED July 8, 2007 Link removed , It seems that brigade Quartermaster
is now selling Ontario Pilot knifes but have not changed the description that
says Made by Camillus as of this posting :thumbdn:

It is stamped " CamilluS New York USA " on the blade.(no date stamp )
How does it differ from the actual "Military issued" knifes" ?
The blade is parkerised and the sheath seems thin for a military issue knife,
But , I really don't know the difference ,so, I thought I'd ask here.

I may be wrong, and will be corrected if I am..... That's the good thing about the forum, we want the facts.
I think the only difference is the way it is packaged. GI issue came in a sealed plastic bag with military part numbers etc, while boxed knives were for commercial sales. Some sheaths had a metal tip, how that fit in I have no idea.

Gentlemen :) ,

It's my understanding that all military issue knives were required to have the metal tip on the sheath. That was to prevent the pilot from being stabbed thru the sheath during the tumoil of ejecting, evading and all that entails. Civilian sheaths did not have the metal.

I doubt that the knife was ever owned by the military; however, I'd bet that Brigade Quartermaster asked for the true military type sheath when they bought the knives from Camillus. Camillus was a legitimate military supplier of the knife until the 80's, then Ontario took over..

I have a GI issue knife at home, (at work now) still in plastic wrap, will check later and see how the sheath is made.

Camillus was the primary supplier for the 5" pilot survival knife until the mid- 1980's. After this time Ontario acquired the contract.

The metal tip sheath was provided primarily to the military since 1969. Special customers could also order these knives with the military sheath.

1894-Your knife was made recently since it has the new style stamping.

There is no difference in the knives. stevetexas sounds like he has the answer about the metal tip. In the dealer catalog 5733 (regular sheath) msrp $54.99; and 5733M (metal tip sheat) msrp $57.99 are the same knife.

As for the date I know the newer knives do not have a date. I dont have any info on the older knive.

Trivia, read "THE JET PILOT'S SURVIVAL KNIFE"

I just realized that I never thanked everyone for thier contribution to my
thread. Thank You all .
I have been watching this board as Camillus was takeing its last breaths.
When I drive by the old office , and see that old flag at 1 / 2 mast , I can almost hear some one playing "Tapps" < sad >
Even more so, at night, with the lights still on in the factory, and no one there.

I do love my new Pilots Knife ( even more special now )

Thank you all again , I hope that the Camillus forum can be combined
with the Schrade one.
My best to the former employees.

1894 :) ,

The knife that you have is the same as the ones that have been carried by a lot of men when they went over enemy territory. Some few of them got shot down inside enemy territory.

Iceal Hambleton, LTC, USAF, used one to kill an enemy before he (Hambleton) was able to be rescued by a US Navy SEAL and a Vietnamese sailor. Look up BAT 21.

Just recieved a so called Viet Nam era pilots knife with a tag on the back of the sheath marked Knife, Hunting, Sheathed, Survival, Pilot. Number at top is 7340-00-098-4327. Under Knife,Hunting... Are the numbers SAE - AS8662. Under that it's marked FSS-GS-07F-0296J. Under that is Ontario Knife Company. 5/01 Man did I take a screwin'. No marking on blade. To make matters worse the blade is dull. Sheath has a metal end.

redjohn48, the FSN is too long for being a Vietnam era knife. The two 00's were not added till later, I believe.

Redjohn48: Your knife was manufactured for the military by Ontario in May, 2001, pursuant to MilSpec SAE AS8662 as adopted 8/30/1999. Plainly, it missed VietNam by a few years. If that was how it was billed for sale, you might get a refund by noting the above in company with a word or two like "fraud" or "misrepresentation," especially if it was an e_bay purchase.
