every time i seem to grt an awesoms blade ready to be drilled form pin holes i end upwith them off. any ideas how youguys like to do it would be awesome! once i have the holes marked its easy i have a dril press

Mark them carefully with a caliper. If they're just a little off, ajust the tang width at the grinder.

Like Andy said mark them with a caliper. Then center punch where you want the holes to keep the drill bit in place when you start drilling.

a #3 center drill will help out a lot, after you center punch, center drill it about 1/16" deep then come back with your regular drill, never fails.

If you are using epoxy, the hole in the tang can be larger than your pin. The epoxy will fill up the extra space.

Color your tang with black permanent marker or machinist's layout fluid.

Decide your spacing for the pins along the length of the tang, for example 1/2" from the ends of the handle material on each end. Scribe a light line across the tang to mark these locations.

Using a digital caliper, at the front pin location, measure the width of the tang. Devide that figure by 2 and set your caliper for that measurement. Rest one leg of the caliper on the edge of the tang and scribe an intersecting line across the front pin location. Measure the width of the rear pin location and devide that measurement by 2. Set your caliper for that measurement and scribe an intersecting line for the rear pin location. You now have 2 perfectly layed out pin locations that should look like this + +

Center punch the marks (a fine spring loaded center punch works well for the initial marks, then follow up with a normal center punch). Drill your 2 perfectly layed out pin holes. If you want a real want to be extra precise, you can drill the pin holes slightly undersize and then follow that with a chucking reamer of the appropriate pin size.

The pins sometimes look a little nicer if they aren't dead in the center of the handle but slightly off center towards the spine-side of the handle.
