At the risk of invoking the "when I was a kid we lived in a shoe box and liked it" meme, when I was kid, this was really the only option we had.

It is a lot of work... to learn. This is what we worked on instead of scout badges. Once learned it's natural, like tying your shoe laces.

The tricky bit is the pushing down with the 3rd finger while pinching the blade.

Well thankfully I don't need to learn this to use a knife one handed! I think I'll just keep my slip joints for 2 handed duty.
