Waht would cause the white exposed parts of a stag handle to auqire a rather dark pink color? I thought it might have been something in the pouch sheath, but parts that are never in contact with the sheath have gone pink too. I could "fix it" my way with Fiebings leather dye, but this is not one of my knives. It is an early model Al Pendray wootz integral hunter., so you see my dilemna.

Maybe it would be best left to do its pinking up all natural?? I had some Dahl ram horn that was and is still pink after 20 years.
Having the owner decide on the handle is the way I would go.

No...this is actually kind of purplish pink.

i have a piece of deer antler that has a natural pink color in it. i dont think the color will show up in a picture but if it will, i'll post some pictutres of it. the antler will go on a knife for a friend's wife when i get it made.

Just a wild guess, you used white tail deer antler didn't you?

George

Nope....as best as I can tell, Mr. Pendray used a sambar stag carver for this handle. and all of the exposed white parts are now this purlish pink excpet for one tiny spot right up aganst the buttcap. Even the tops of the "popcorn" where the white was showing are now pink.

I have mule deer, elk, and white tail antler, some of which I've had 18 years, and none of it has turned pink.

What color is the sheath? Ox blood leather dye has a purple/pink color to it. Perhaps moisture and leather dye could have influenced the coloring, although it hasn't made contact.

Did the stag ever get treated with potassium permanganate? It's sometimes used to darken stag or wood. It has that hue until it browns. Sounds like over time it might have permeated the ehtire piece, but not sufficiently to brown it.
