Pinning a shield?

I am working on rehandling another traditional, and I was thinking about trying to pin a simple oval or bar shield. Any tips?

Countersink the shield well, and peen the pins into the countersink-then finish them flush.
Peening the pins needs to be done with a small hammer. A 4 ounce hammer is too big-way too big.

So the pins are not part of the shield, they go though connecting it to the liner? What tools are used to shape the scales to accept the shield?

No-the pins go through the shield. I guess you could hard solder the pins to the shield.
Traditionally, scales are cut for shields with a "parser." Nowadays, they are usually done with a flexible shaft machine or Dremel.
