I am going to be using some brass pins in stag slabs and was wondering how to get them down to the finished height without taking down the texture of the stag?
I leave as little as possible sticking above the surface of the stag. Then I grind the rest down CAREFULLY with a carbide burr in my air grinder. My air grinder is similar to a dremel tool, it just runs at a higher RPM. A dremel will work ok too. I only worry about that in the rough areas of the stag, I just grind the pins down on the belt grinder with stag material, on the smooth parts.

I use the dremel tool with a cutoff wheel to trim pins on stag handles. If I touch the stag lightly I don't worry because I feel a little of the white showing through is desirable to contrast the dark bark of the stag.
