Pins, Rivets and Bolts - which do you use?

Flared tubing looks like a very good attachment. Is there a reason more knife makers don't use flared tubing?

Personally I've never used it without other fasteners, but I don't see why you couldn't. I imagine 2 or 3 would be plenty strong.

EDIT Tracy (and probably others) sells a fixture for flaring them quickly and evenly here. I imagine you could make a set yourself if you have a lathe.

Dang, I was all happy about the reference to low-priced corbys, went to Pop's, they are now > $2.00/ea. Oh well. They are expensive everywhere, now. I wish AKS would get more in SS.

Go back and look again and you'll see that they are priced $2 per pair which is $1 each.

I use common nails because I have lots of them, and they are usually all I need.

I have used everything, I really like Colby for any outdoor knives, just seems a bit tougher with the mechanical connection and the epoxy. Just did rivits for the first time, and I like it, used with epoxy no clamps just press the rivits and let cure. If I use pins I alway flare, and typically will not clamp for the expoxy, just let the pin pressure hold it while the epoxy cures.

That may be ok for bushcraft, but if it sees blood and guts, it's more difficult to clean out the little holes than a smooth sealed handle.

I use the corbys alot and grind to length with the belt sander and small pliers. Male and female. Dip in water. So far so good. I use epoxy.also.
