well when my poineers came they were actually the farmer model. I remember years ago I had a farmer same configuration, but the handles on the old one were red, and had the old swiss cross, not the newer shield. I know the old soldiers issue knife was red aluminum for a time before being switched to silver in the 60's. They must have changed the farmer to silver for the same reason (took much londer though!!). I remember my old farmer, how the red would scratch and looked pretty unsightly after a while.

the farmer (listed as pioneer) on the swiss-knife.com website is a great carry knife!!! I like my soldier, but a key ring (to use for a lanyard, and in this case Im using one of the victorinox knife chains)and a saw were all it needed to be a great all around utility knife!!

I have the timekepper and the sak book on the way!!! looking forward to it!!! :)

I envy you (please don´t tell me that´s a sin, it´s more like I´m happy you have and enjoy them and I hope I´ll get one some day).

I once mentioned the farmer to the guy at a neaby boy scout shop and he said he would try to get it, he got some red ones with a small hook blade instead of the can opener and I didn´t buy one (I open lots of cans), I´ll get a silver one eventually.

I have two soldiers, one from Victorinox with the key ring and one from Wenger with the large shackle, I don´t carry them much because their functions overlap with my Victorinox hunter EDC, but I sure like the stronger blade and solid screwdriver (and the alox handles as mentioned on another thread), sometimes I carry one on weekends hanging from a lanyard on my belt (but then I miss the saw and scissors).

Enjoy your knives !!.

Personally I prefer mine without the key ring. It digs into the palm of my hand. I really wish more models were available in Alox and in the U.S. swiss-knife.com's shipping rate appear to have gone up a bit in the last month.

Just buy enough (100 Swiss Francs) that the economy shipping is free. Locksmith, Super Tinker and Pioneer did it for me. "Really, honey, that third knife paid for itself because I got free shipping".

Where are you all findking these knives? I've been on a swiss army knife site and can't find the pioneer and some of the others that you mentioned.

Thanks Dean

I couldn't agree more pwork, the key ring does dig into the hand. I rather enjoy this knife for its robust design but would much prefer the hollow rivet. This would correct that short coming of the alox models. FYI folks, I sent V-Nox an e-mail several weeks ago suggesting they replace the current design with that of the hollow rivet, expressing that it was a better design... To date I have yet to receive a response back from v-nox. Nothing! We could all sent of an e-mail maybe they would then find reason to respond, and possibly change things.

Don swiss-knife.com has them.

I emailed victorinox a couple times a month ago or so, never heard from them. However I needed a part and swiss army brands here in the U.S. sent me the parts for free, and sent me an order form listing different parts!!! :)

I don´t order into Mexico because in the past it has been a hassle getting through customs and things end up costing more than buying locally. Prices on SAKS vary widely here, I believe it depends on whether they are brought in from the U.S, or directly from Europe.

I like the key ring because I like lanyards, it does get in the way sometimes when using the screwdriver, in some SAKS I have replaced it with a smaller ring (as from the Classic range) but I prefer the large shackle on the hollow rivet.

sorry to hear that Don :( . So you can only buy from within Mexico to avoid problems?

oh I agree with you about the shackle. I have an old wenger with a shackle thats great!!!

Edited to simplify and soften my comments on customs, let me just say that it´s not too easy to get knives through customs and after import taxes there is no price advantage over buying locally.

I like the ring for the same reasons, but a shackle may work better.
great. Still waiting for a reply from swiss army brands. I'll have to send one to v-nox direct, will let you know.

I´m carrying the Wenger soldier today, its from 1992, beveled and sharpened inside the cap lifter for stripping wire, I´ve made the leather punch very pointy for scribbing and built a double bevel edge on the main blade of 12 and 17 degrees.

I touched it up over the weekend with an extra fine ceramic hone and then spend some time on the strop. I know the super fine edge won´t hold for too long, but right now I can cut a hanging hair with it.

I Hope you all get your new knives soon.

I have a wenger soldier from 96 I periodically use. When I ordered my other sak's I also ordered the knife chain wenger makes for their knife.
