I just received a Pioneer II in a trade, and this knife does not seem "right"...

1. The blade folds into the handle VERY DEEPLY, clear to the thumb-stud. Is this "normal"?

2. The cut-out in the handle for the thumb-stud seems to be too high, and doesn't really match the thumb-stud. Is this "normal"?

3. When the the knife is closed, and I shake it, I can hear something rattle inside. Is this "normal"?

4. The pocket-clip is set so that this is a "tip-down" folder, unlike both my Sifu, and Carnivore Cub. Is this "normal"?

HELP...

Yep, it's all normal buddy.

I wondered some of the same things when I got mine. I thought it was weird looking.

The blade does fold way into the handle. all the way to the thumbstud.

The thumbstud on mine is right at the back tip of the finger cutout on the handle. It is not in the middle, like you'd think it should be.

Mine rattles too. It's no big deal, just one of the pins. I have yet to hear of one of them that didn't rattle!

Mine's tip down too.

This thing won't win any beauty contests, and it does have some weird ergonomics, but it's true beauty is in it's use. Put that sucker through it's paces and see if it let's you down. How do you like the cub? No ergo problems on that baby - the handles on those are excellent!

It sounds about right to me. The Pioneer series knives were all tip down, unlike latter REKATs. The rattle sound you hear is the opening stop pin. If it bothers you try putting a drop of super glue on it. I let mine rattle, it isn't going anywhere.

AntDog & Easyrider,

THANK-YOU! That info REALLY puts my feeble little mind to rest.

As far as the Carnivore Cub goes...That little knife (well, next to the Sifu it's "little")...ROCKS!!! That one is STOUT!, and I really LOVE the way it feels in my hand! (But the thumb-stud IS on the "wrong" side of the blade, as I'm a "Lefty"...But I CAN "fix" that, as soon as I find an Allen wrench to fit it...).

Hmmmn. I have a used Pioneer 1. The thumb stud goes close to the scale, but stops about 1/8" from it. As you say in the newer version, the stud is at the very rear of the finger cutout.

Kinda disappointing that they evidently didn't move the stud backwards about 3/16" after they put the lock on the handle. On the earlier model, the lock release ends up about 1/8" in back of the stud when the blade is opened. That 3/16" could make the thing a lot easier to be opened.

Mine had apparently just had a new spring installed by REKAT. It is at least as gritty as any of the early Pioneers were described as being. I keep lubing -- Tuf Glide -- and working the pivot like crazy, and it gets a little better, until I set it down for a day, then it is back to exactly where it was when I received it.

I know it never was intended to have tactical applications, but an easy opening blade would have made a lot of difference in that regard.

Oh -- mine rattles like crazy too.

Bugs3x,

Yah, I've noticed that BOTH my Pioneer II, and Carnivor Cub are alittle "gritty", and not nearly as smooth as my Sifu.

I have to say, threads like this are why I love this place!

I just got my Pioneer II and, after wiping the vomit off my chin

(Damn this thing is ugly) I noticed everything that glockman did other than the clip. First place I came to look was this forum and blammmmo... here are the answers to my questions.

I love this knife already. There is something to be said for a knife that right out of the box has a 100% utilitarian look. I feel like I could run over this with my truck and still slice a tomato with it.

The edge is great, lock up tight and it's good and ugly. I may have a few liner locks up for trade on a Carni/Carni Cub so keep your eyes peeled.

I also have the gritty action and think it is actually the rolling lock rubbing the blade as it is opened, so I'm wondering if a little poishing is in order, has anyone tried to do this?

I just put a little tuf-glide at the pivot & mine loosened right up. But then.... got gritty again! I have no idea why. I just used it as a "hand pacifier" for a while and opened and closed it A LOT and it eventually got to where it opens like butter.

I have heard of people opening them up and polishing, but I think rekat said lately if you crack 'em open it now voids the warranty. Am I right on this? Oh well - I'd just open it and close it a lot, throw in a little of your favorite lubricant, and see if it helps.

It is my understanding that by opening up the knife you void the warranty. Now I must confess that I'm a warranty violator.

IF you decide to open it up, watch out for the Rolling lock spring. They are suppose to be glued in, but I recommend that you take the handle off with a towel or rag over the knife just in case.I'm speaking from personal experience.

If your not sure about it then just grab the lubricant of choice and repeatly open and close the knife.

Bob Brothers...Ya listening? How best to get rid of the "grit" in our REKAT folders?

Aside from the "warrenty issue", WOULD it help to take the knife apart, and lightly polish the contact & friction areas in order to "remove" the "grittyness" that I feel when opening & closing the folders?

Also, is there a reason that the stop-pin "rattles" in my Pioneer II? (My guess is that it is just a little bit too short, and the rattle that I hear is it banging back and forth against the liners.).

I'm not a Bob Bro, but here's my experience with your questions:

Good, proper, and frequent lubing combined with use will smooth it out better than polishing. I tried that and it didn't make much difference, but using and lubing it with Miltec did. I don't think it'll ever be as smooth as other knives, but it's certainly stouter (more important to me).

Your "guess" on the pin is exactly on target. Mine is the same way, but since I don't go around shaking my knife like a baby rattle, I don't notice it

I fixed my rattling!

I posted how I did it in this string so check it out if you're intersted. E-mail me if you want more details, it worked better than I could have hoped.

BTW, mine annoyed the heck out of me because when I walked it rattled, can't take that.

Mountain Biker, what kind of rig do you have? I ride almost daily and love it almost as much as playing with knives
