Pipe for forge

I have just begun the gathering tool process. I'd been keeping an eye out for a ten inch chunk of pipe for a forge. My neighbor just gave me 30 inch long piece of 12 inch heavy wall.

Not sure if I'm going to keep looking for ten inch or not. Lots more research to do.

I have lots of ceramic fiber blanket laying around left over from gas fired raku kiln projects, so that's a plus. Plenty of fire brick too.

I'll spend the morning hitting the search button.

I don't particularly see a problem with a 12" pipe. A lot of people use propane/freon tanks and I believe those are 12". Just add an extra layer of 1" wool and have a more efficient forge.

If you have enough fire brick you may be able to do what I've done. I built up a small open ended (open at both ends) forge and stack the bricks at the ends according to whatever you're working on. This has the advantage of being adjustable in size. I suppose this isn't the best in terms of heat control, thus maybe not the best set-up if you plan to use it for heat treatment, but for forging it makes a small, versatile forge that seems to work well. It also breaks down for easier storage which, for me, is another plus. Just an idea based on what has worked for me.

Mark.

Hard firebrick or soft?

My first forge was a knock-down firebrick forge which did work well but the hard firebricks didn't last very long due to the uneven heating. The high heat accross the middle of the bricks caused them to develop cracks through the middle. I built another forge before too many bricks were damaged and I still use them to cover the ends of my horizontal forges.

I built mine from a 30lb propane tank using Indian George's instructions and it works great. Only problem I have is that I didn't get a blower with enough CFM output so it only got up to about 1200-1300 degrees when properly adjusted.

Thanks George. You have a great informative website. I've been going back to your site for a while now. I just read your forge pages again, and if it says if your running propane or natural gas, I've missed it each time I read it.

So does the burner set up remain the same for to two fuels, other than the orifice?

To run NG you would run it without the jet.

You guys that know forges, is there an ideal finished interior diameter that winds up being best for these things?
