How much are you looking to spend? For an actual functional pipe hawk (both for chopping and smoking), the cheapest I know of starts at $250 + s/h.
 
thanks , yeh i figured around 2-3 hundred i was wondering about different forges and who had ever used one.

Beaver Bill is the smith I was talking about. While I don't actually have one of his hawks (yet), I've heard nothing but good stuff about them. I've got a usable (for both chopping and smoking) pipe hawk that was made by Mark Williams, but unfortunately he has since retired.

RMJ does make some awesome stuff, but you'll pay a hefty price and wait forever to get it.
 
I thought about getting one of these back in the day, but unless I'm remembering incorrectly, this hawk is cast, not forged.

EDITED: Also, you can find them for a good bit cheaper than $120 (unless that was in Canadian dollars) with a quick google search.
 
I don't know if its just the pieces I've seen, but 99% of the pipe hawks I've seen look like the haft would snap (not crack, not splinter) the first time you used it.
 
Just thought I'd throw this in-
If you're willing to go the do-it-yourself route, R E Davis Company offers several pipe hawk heads cast from 6150 steel. You could finish it yourself, have someone capable heat treat it, and install the handle (which can also be purchased from them) to have a fully functional pipe hawk. Total out of pocket cost could be less than $100, or as much as you're willing to invest in decoration and finish.

I was in the same predicament, having browsed for a cheap but functional pipe hawk for years. But don't let me discourage you from getting a really nice one from a custom smith.
 
Beaver Bill does nice work I have one of his standard throwing hawks and knives . I have had some of his pipe hawks in my hands they are nice

I ordered a kit from them a couple years ago, it's quite nice. Maybe one day I'll actually finish it. :o The booklet they sell is worthwhile if you want to inlay some pewter or stuff like that.

I'm glad to see they're carrying decent steel ones regularly now; back then we had to get a minimum order together and they were more expensive.
