Pipe smoking 101

one of my prized possessions is a Bjarne blasted finish churchwarden. Sadly, i only recently found out Mr Bjarne had passed away in late 08. I had the honour of chatting with him via telephone about his shop and pipemaking. Every time i fire up a bowl of latakia/virginia in my Bjarne long stem, I blow big puffy smoke rings and remember him.

Been smoking Uhle's #300 Blend (Milwaukee, Wisconsin) for the past 40 years or so... great tobacco! I have found less expensive briars such as Uhle's own brand to last years longer than Dunhill's or the like...

Just for giggles take a Google for 'electronic pipes and cigars.' I saw some of these at a recent gunshow in Albuquerque. They have an electronic battery heater which vaporizes a nicotine cartridge or shot of liquid you put in the pipe or cigar. A vapor cloud comes out but no second hand smoke and no smell for non smokers to bitch about. It was fascinating and what's next? Electronic food?

My father in law got me into pipe smoking...gave me 4 x old montana holland pipes cause he got out of pipe smoking (not as young as he once was lol) and I intend to buy some more pipes and tobacco while i'm in the US. I currently have a bag of tobacco from a guy that chops it in Anchorage, AK (a bag of pt barrow at the moment).

any recommendations for readily availible pipe tobacco before I head home?

Don't have a pic, but I have been real happy with my Kirsten pipe. They make them out of aluminum with screw on briar bowls. Similar to a Falcon, but, IMO much better. Very high quality. Smokes great and is good for those who can't or don't want to maintain a stable of more traditional briars.
