Wondering if anyone knew how to form the bowl of a pipe tomahawk? I've heard of useing part of a rifle barle, but was looking more towards some of the presentaiton pieces, most look like they were turned then welded or brazed on.

Anybody know the size the bowl needs to be, the hole going from bowl to haft for good draw?

Pretty clueless here as I don't smoke, but want to make one that is fully funtional, so I'd apreciate any input.

Thanks,

Will

Will, What I've seen looks like most the bowls are out of brass. I would think if you got some 3/4" brass round stock and drilled it out. I'd try drilling and taping it into the head. I used to smoke years ago, I can't imagine smoking a tomahawk pipe.

theere is a company called museam replicals that puts out a catolog . you could find them on the net. that has copies of trade hawk pipes that lewis and clark used as wampum on their 1803 trip to see if there was a northwest passage. by the way natives smoked tobacco and sage and a few other herbs but not what we call marijuana today.

Thanks Guys, think I need to check in with a local smoke shop here in town to see what I can find out about pipes.

My buddy and I made one out of a large ball peen hammer head. The bowl was predrilled a bit as a guide to hot drift and pien into a bowl. The hole in handle to draw through is 3/16,but could be a hair bigger with brass tube pressed in , not authentic though. And for a bowl screen he suggested a pebble. Also If you go to Lowes,or Home depo, ar a lamp supplier you can find alot of brass lamp finials, and parts that srew together easilt to make a whole pipe, esspecially a bowl. Theres a man thats been selling pipes made of lamp partsat seattle pike place market for 25 years....

The book "American Indian Tomahawks" by Peterson details the methods for making all styles of tomahawks with great line drawings and easy to read text explanations. It's expensive to buy, but I got it via interlibrary loan. It has over 300 B/W photos with descriptions and even shows cast pewter hawks!

Thanks Guys, lots of good info here, am planing on starting on one in a day or two, maybe it won't be a disaster:p

Just got my new Track of the Wolf catalog www.trackofthewolf.com and there is a book in there called,

Great Googly-Moogly! Great idea! Guess I'll be scouring the flea markets for ball-peens now
