I've read all the warnings, but I went ahead and bought some 440 from them because the price was right. I want to make a few japanese inspired kitchen knives maybe ~11"oal. So I ordered two pieces of .125*2*18.

What arrived was a 22" and a 30", cool free steel right? Wrong, it is bent and twisted to sh*t  Using a a level, I can find about a few choice sections that are maybe 6" max.

The way I figure, I'll never get the peices straight by bending alone, and it's only 1/8" so grinding it straight is going to leave me with freakin 1/32" stock. Grrrrr

I know it's my own fault, but I was just hoping they'd prove everyone wrong.

So...does anyone sell PG 440C, that is shipped properly?

Thanks all, just pissed, sorry for the rant.

Dan

Done a little searchin instead of acting like a petulent child...seems PG is far more pricey than I thought. Can anyone tell me who will ship me mill run stock that is actually straight.

Knifeandgun.com seems to have it, anyone else?

Thanks again,
Dan (Petulent Child)

Dan,
Call em up and raise hell, then send it back and demand a replacement that is straight and flat.
If that doesn't work, let us know. There's been alot of complaining about them lately.

I think if you get the sheared plate stock it will/be warp.
ask for bar stock if you can't get it look for it elsewhere I'd say.
Call A.S. ask for Terry he's the one that handles the steel for Knife makers there, The steel I get is packaged in tubes unless the tubes
are bent it's not the shipping/packing that is the prob..
try Texas Knife supply too.

My dealings with A.S. have been very good, I ordered at least 4 feet of PG O-1 and it is perfectly straight. Im sure if you call them they will fix your situation

Thanks guys,

It was packages in a heavy-duty tube, took me like five minutes to get it open because they screwed the caps in. It definitely wasn't the packaging.

R.W.

Perhaps, I will give Tru-grit a try.

Kit,
I just don't know if it's worth the effort and postage for $28 worth of steel.

I think I might just salvage the smaller sections and make some other designs I had in mind.

Dan

Just looked at the Admiral site again, and it says that the 440c is sheared  wish I had noticed. Oh well, I'll just have to try someone else.

I'm sorry to hear about your problem...but I just wanted to say that in all my dealings with Admiral, I only had one problem. They had accidentally mislabeled my package with another maker's and sent the steel to the wrong address. They gave me a slip for UPS to pick up the wrong package for free, and sent me my original order plus some for my trouble.

As was said, Terry is the one to deal with :)

There is a widespread misconception that the customer has to pay the freight back to the supplier, for the suppliers mistakes. It just ain't so. Call Admiral, talk to Terry, tell him the problem, and request that they issue a UPS pickup slip for the material you have, and reship new, unbent material to you at N/C. That means no charge.
Most companies will gladly do this, when it is their fault. I just wish more people would do this.

Sorry to here that happened to you. I have only had one order with Admiral and it went off very well for me.

I wont get into the details again, but my one experience with admiral was not good. After a "misunderstanding" concerning how much steel I was buying, the sales person just kept telling me "you should have known that is how it works, everyone does it that way..." When I asked about their web sites that says "Admiral Steel is committed to total customer satisfaction." she continued to tell me there is nothing she could do. This went on forever... anyway I wont buy from them again.

My step-father-in-law lives about 45 min. from Admiral, so I asked him to go pick up two 36" X 3/4" dia. bars of 52100. The cutting machine they were going to use was being used at the moment cutting somethign big and I think it was close to 5:00 so they were going to give him the 40" and approx 60" pices for the 36" price. Then they could not find the counter sails person so they ended up just giving him the two bars :D The order before had some 1/8" ats-34 that looked ok but when I ground the bevel on a blade it showed to have what looks like a thin fold line, or stag in it  If I redo it as a full flat grind I might be able to get rid of it but I have not been inspired to invest the time into it. Overall I have been pleased with their service and prompt shipping though.

Terry is not a She get the right person and you'll get better service. she probably said that because that's all SHE could do.

We can beat the He!! out of any of these people
and places, we and they are all human and most of
the time do our very best or we won't be working long
in our fields. it's simple, if you don't like the service
you don't have to shop there. :( call Terry to order and call Terry
to gripe :( :(

"Terry is not a She get the right person and you'll get better service. she probably said that because that's all SHE could do"

I was not trying to say I had been talking to Terry. I was just explaining what had happened in my case. I do not remember what her name was. I also tried to get to someone else,(supervisor, manager...) but was told no one else was available. I am not saying people do not make mistakes, I make them all the time, but when I do I try to make it right or at the least apologize and try to make the person feel better about the situation. The only response I got from this company in this case was I was wrong and I should get over it..

And you are right, you said you didn't talk to Terry.
What I said,, is just meant to be a heads up,

call Terry to order and call Terry to gripe it's his job with
Admiral Steel.

I don't talk to any she's there..:footinmou
Terry is the only one that takes care of the knife steels at
A,S, for the knife Makers. and being busy is out at times.
if a She told you that, then she was wrong in doing so
and Terry should have been told this,
we've all seen bad help and the company needs to know of it..

Just an added note...
I hear from time to time (many times)the customer is always right
 I do beg to differ this statement,,
only because some customers don't know they are wrong.

this note was not directed towards you
and don't take it that way (please) because
I don't know both sides of the story.
:(

Graymaker; thanks for the heads up on who to talk to. I wish I could have worked with Terry and I would probably be recommending A.S. instead of warning of bad service.

I agree with you about "the customer is always right" statement. I have delt with that from both sides.
From the customer side I expect good and FAIR service, not anything free or discounted, but just what I thought I was getting for the price agreed (assuming I am somewhat intelligent).

From the other side I think in the long run it is advantages to give a little to make a customer feel better about the situation rather that having people, who feel (and loudly voice truthfully or not) that they have been wronged.
There are exceptions of course, such as someone who is just trying to take advantage of you or just being an A**hole.

In that case I do not mind losing that customer and I will defend my reasons why he/she was treated as such....

I know you said your post was not directed at me and I do not take any offence, just giving my 2 cents. :)

I've read, in the past on these forums, of several people having problems with a certain woman at Admiral. I can't remember her name, but she is apparently an institution there. As such, probably nothing will be done about her bad manners, and poor customer relations. But it wouldn't hurt to keep complaining if it happens to you.
Like Graymaker said, don't talk to any women there, only Terry Summers(a man).;)

Definately speak to Terry Summers ONLY ! Screw anyone else. He's a great guy and has made good on all dealings we have had (alot). Once there was a shippment of steel where a few piecec were a bit mangled and to grind it down would have meant too much loss to the desired thickness. Anyway, I mentioned it to Terry and he made good immediately. I was ent the replacement pieces, no problem. Otherwise, every piece of steel they've sent since has ben great quality. Just gotsome S30V that looks fantastic. Terry Summers is the man to speak to. If you email him, he will definately respond. It might take a day or two but he will definately reply. I've found that the best way to get him as he's often out of the office running around the facility or traveling. Hope you get this cleared up, take care.....RDT

I tried dealing with "Terry." Not only would no one forward me to him, but because I was ordering two kinds of steel, they were handled by two different people and I had two shipping charges and two packages. I tried when I ordered to prevent this, they would not budge. Then the stuff came in a package I literally had to open with my circular saw... And the steel was U-shaped.

Never again; they'll never see another dime of mine. Life is too short.

Dave
