Pistol Caliber Carbine

Horsewright Horsewright , a buddy of mine just bought a Uberti 1873 short rifle. CH, 38/357. Wow, is that rifle ever sweet.
Almost embarrassed to say mine is a Ruger PC Carbine with Sig Romeo5 red dot. Very pedestrian, but may come in handy where I think we are heading.

So I'm buying an OD green Tavor X95. My mom likes it because she can easily use it being only 4'11".

Yes they are!

Thanks. I'm very excited. My first rifle in 5.56mm.
I hope you have ample stock of 5.56/223 ammo! Get some extra mags, and if you are plan on getting any accessories Black Friday is almost here!!! Have fun with your new toy!!!

In a pistol brace AR-15, the 300BO is a hard-hitting and effective option and better than a 5.56. If you have never shot one indoors, make sure you have plugs and muffs if you are running a 5.56 SBR/Pistol as they are horrendously loud and even with a good flash suppressor will make you night blind for a while. A 300BO with subs hits hard and won't put a huge pressure wave across your face.

For something less high profile, the pistol caliber lever guns are sweet options. A 44 Magnum isn't bad out of a 16" barrel and at urban CQB distances will hit really hard! A couple boxes of .44/.45 rounds and a lever gun are also less confrontational if you are traveling across legal jurisdictions.

A lever-action rifle isn't uber or tacti-cool but, they are very effective in moderately skilled hands. A 240/250gr pill with a .44/.45 diameter at rifle velocities will be really effective at realistic shooting distances in a self-defense scenario.

I waffle between something like this and a "social" shotgun. The lever-action rifle though certainly wins in overall portability being smaller, lighter and, generally more trim. This of course applies significantly to the ammunition with a box of 50 pistol cartridges being a fraction of a box of shotgun shells in weight and bulk.

Coming full circle, a 16" barreled AR-15 or lever-action are really different in terms of overall bulk and portability. Forget your grandpa's 30-30 and pick up a pistol caliber lever-action!

If you must have a 5.56 rifle, seriously consider a bullpup to keep the overall length reasonable.

I know they're not too cool to some, but I am loving my Hi-Point carbine. Dirt cheap, almost seems made for home defense - easy to add lights, lasers, any kind of optic you want, and it shoots amazingly well. For me, I have no desire to shoot a short-barreled 5.56 indoors in a home defense situation - too much flash, too much noise, and too much velocity. YMMV

A 300 Black Out shooting 240gr subsonic isn't too bad. Add a suppressor and it is even better.

My PCC is a 1944 USGI Inland M1 Carbine.

I've got a 1944 Underwood M1 Carbine. I put a rail and red dot on it.

Of course .30 carbine is a bit more powerful than a pistol round. I keep mine under my bed with Underwood Extreme cavitator rounds in a 30 round mag.

Yes, .30 Carbine is a rifle round but also used in pistols like the Ruger Blackhawk which I've always wanted in that caliber. It is an intermediate rifle round at best, however.

Turns out I won't be able to pick up the Tavor SAR until tomorrow. Here is a pic though.

I wish Ruger still made the Deerfield Carbines in 44 Mag ... those are a blast to shoot and super nice brush guns for deer and hogs. As it is I have several Marlin, Henry, and Winchester lever guns that I love to shoot that work just was well.
