Pistol holster for backpacking?

cmdionne, what have you seen for chest rigs? I am seriously considering a molle chest rig to add a pistol and other easily accessible items without ever having to dig for them.

This seems to fit the bill http://www.survivalsheath.com/holsters/index.htm

Otherwise you could just get a MOLLE chest rig and then add a MOLLE compatible holster.

If it's a small pistol and you want to go really cheap you could get one of the Chinese surplus AK or SKS chest right and maybe that would work too.

Thanks for the input guys. I realize that it is a tool that will likely never be used (hopefully). But in any case, I like to be prepared for all scenarios (ya never know).

Loosearrow, Simply Rugged chest holster is another great idea I had not thought of. Thanks.
You are welcome. You could buy the holster then rig your own straps. That is what I would do. He has some good ideas. You could modify an existing holster to to the same. Middle of the chest rig seems handy while backpacking or fishing in a stream, then transfer to belt when in camp. If you have more than one pistol, the harness straps could be moved over to another holster. He has a rig adaptor for a regular type of holster that would be easy to make if you are handy. Regards

Depends on the carry. I prefer a crossdraw full flap angled holster for either of the 6 inch revolvers. If concealment is an issue, I generally either follow family tradition and pop a .32 pocket pistol down in the main compartment of the pack, or in my waistpack. I don't see any kind of secure concealed carry options for backpacking that are going to be 'uber tactical quick draw" anyhow.

I would look at the Bianchi military holster. It can be carried on the belt, thigh, tanker, or shoulder holstered. It is ambi, can be used with or without the flap, and a thumbsnap can be attached. With it's ALICE clip, it can be attached or moved in five seconds. It is made for a variety of handguns other than the M9. Absolutely one of the most versatile holsters made. You can also get matching clip pouches, and the holster has a cleaning rod incorporated.

Safepacker seems to offer the most benefits. The handgun is easily accessible, and by concealing the handgun, it keeps you in compliance with most jurisdiction's rules.

I carry a Springfield XD-9 SubCompact concealed at the small of the back. I like the element of surprise a concealed firearm brings to the table when confronted by some of those crazies running around in the woods...

I highly recommend Simply Rugged holsters. I currently own three, one for a G-20, a SP101, and a 637 S&W. Don't even know you are wearing them. They are a very good value and Rob is a good guy to deal with.

I had a chest rig from www.alaskasportsmanproducts.com made for my father's 44 for his fishing trip to Alaska a few years ago. I never wore it, but he said it worked great. Said at times forgot he had it on. Probably not what you're lookin for. Just thought I would throw it out there.

I've tried a few different things, but here's how I carry. I find myself usually carrying either my Ruger Mark 1 or a US Arms Seville in .44 mag. I carry in high ride holsters on a snug pistol belt, and the waist belt of my pack just straps around the outside. I have no discomfort, and it's tucked right where I can get at it. re-holstering means loosening the pack belt, but getting it out is what's important right? I tried a crossdraw setup once, but it had to sit too far forward on my hip and dug in a bit.

I carry a Bianchi pancake holster, it rides well, up & out of the way(for me anyway) I carry a S&W model #65 .357 4". with the smaller magna grips.

I also carry in a Bianchi pancake,44mag for Grizz country, and Taurus.22mag snubbie most the of the other time.
Also Carry My Colt Woodsman in a good old Hunter holster.

I've been eyeing this rig for awhile. Looks like it would carry a lot of useful items in a convenient place. It seems like it would be a little front heavy, though.

What I'd like is a chest rig that attaches to the straps on a Camelbak or a back pack. Not much available, that I can find.

I recently ran across something that looks good (I will give reference to the poster on another forum who put this up upon request):

I was told this came from a place called Westwoods Landing. Their site seems to have some issues, but you should still be able to contact them if interested.

holy crap, its 80-150 bucks for a small nylon baggy? christ sakes they are really making money huh? I mean you could sew one together in like 5 mins if you had a sewing machine and 5 dollars worth of material, perhaps less!

A "nylon baggie"?

Safepackers are made using very high quality materials. The main part of the holster, as well as the flap closure are padded to help protect the firearm.

Inside the main part of the Safepacker where the handgun rides is another area where a second magazine can be stored.

The flap has a pocket in it for smaller items which closes using velcro.

The flap is fastened using high quality nylon compression buckles, the back of the holster has a very wide belt strap which can be used to attach the thing to your belt or to a backpack waist belt.

They are more than just a "nylon baggie"......

I'll add another  for the safepacker. I use mine all the time with a Glock 23. Very good piece of gear.
