I burnt a whole stump once didnt realize it was fat wood until i saw the pool of hardened resin it left on the concrete part of my back yard.
I was wondering how it burnt so damn long.....
I have several hundred pounds of fatwood in several boxes. I'm almost tempted to light it all on fire just to see how long it would burn. I don't think the fire station down the street would appreciate it much, but at least they would be temporarily entertained by my stupidity.
Living in a part of the country where all the stumps are frozen solid and buried under a foot of hard-packed snow, I'm horrified to see all that fatwood burned at once when I can't even dig out a splinter of the stuff!
when i was out hunting the other day i found a nice fatwood stump, so i hacked into it with my axe and got about 10lbs of it and then burned it all cooking my lunch..i wish i had my camera.
Two years ago the forestry department did a controlled burn where I hunt elk, they had been in there burning around trees and burned up a few hundred old pitch stumps. The stump would burn all the way down and follow the roots leaving little tunnels. The ODFW guy I spoke with said they had been in there two weeks prior and there were still stumps burning. Pitdog, I wish you luck on that one....
