So, I thought I had made my decision form next knife a R.A.T. TAK-1 then I keep seeing this "wonder knife" of Pitdog's in all of his photos ie. the Dumpster Mutt.

So, I look it up and low and behold it has right around the same dimesions and price. So now I have to reevaluate my decision with this new variable to factor in.

So, Pitdog if I remember corrrectly you said that you have a very lucky son who got a TAK-1. Is there anychance of getting some compairson/side-by-side photos of them?:D

Also I would luv to hear everybodies thoughts on the TAK-1 vs. the Dumpster Mutt.

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

HI,
I have the TAK-1 in D2 and the Urban Mutt. The two knives are not competitors. While they are similar in size, their functions are slightly different. The mutt is a very thick, tough, knife. The TAK-1 (in D2) is also tough but more of a slicer. The TAK-1 in 1095 might be closer but nothing is as tough as a Mutt in SR77. In reality they are not close in price since you can only get a Mutt on the secondary market for a fairly increased price. It really boils down to the handle, since you are not actually likely to break either knife. Micarta versus Res-C. While I have both, I prefer (actually carry) the RMD, HRLM, or Bravo-1. If you get the TAK-1, definitely opt up for the On-Scene Kydex sheath. It is great and the Nylon one that comes with the TAK-1 sucks.
All told both knives are very good. The dificulty of getting a Mutt may make the descision a moot point.

i have an rtak-2 and a rat-3,no tak although thay use the same steel.

i have 5 knives from scrapyard including a dumpster mutt.

i think it depends on your plans.while the dm is my all time favorite,if your just gonna be doing normal stuff you dont need the headache of trying to find one on the secondary market because the tak will take care of you.

if you want the strongest damn piece of steel you can get your hands on then you want a 'mutt.

why???...because it is made of s7 steel..{scrapyard calls it sr77}..and it is .285 THICK!!!

this little thing is thicker than mt ranger rd-9.it makes a 1/4 thick blade look skinny and the tak isnt even a 1/4 inch.the tak is 3/16.the 'mutt is almost twice as thick and s7 is one of the toughest knife steels their are.

did you see what noss did to a scrapper.its not to hard to get a mutt.go to the busse forum here at blade forums and at the top of the page is a thread for busse/swamprat/scrapyard sales.look through their for a week or so and you can get one for around 125-150 new.i think theirs one on their now.

now you have to realize that their are 2 different dumpstermutts.the original one with black coating that they call CG for combat grade and the LE-limited edition one.

the LE is a satin finished full flat grind and is .250 as opposed to the saber grind CG at .285.the chose is yours.

imo,the dumpstermutt is the best knife ever made for that size.but thats just me and what i like.get what you like

Hum...I didn't check the availabilty of the Dumpster Mutt just saw its specs and price ($69.95) listed on their site

So, it would seem that yet again I have been teased by an unattainable knife, blasted

I guess the TAK it is. Oh and have no fear I always planed on getting one of normarks sheaths for it to start and then maybe try to make a leather one too.

Yep, the Busse business model works for their various entities, certain profiteers, some sheath makers and virtually no one else.

Look into Bark River. They make you wait for runs, announced in advance at the "other" forum, but you put in your handle material details and you get it at a reasonable price in a reasonable time frame through your chosen dealer without shopping hysterics.

Or wait for RAT Cutlery's forthcoming RC-4, which looks like an improved 1095 TAK.

don't you love that $70 but has been outta stock for years....after market is what $100-150..I prefer the TAK or any Rat cutlery...reliable,excellent warranty and for the money ,great blade...and whether you go D2 or 1095 the TAK is a great knife for the money you spend...how can you go wrong...

RAT Cutlery RC4 will be available January sometime .....I can not wait , I am going to purchase one of each model...RC-4 & RC-6

Hey bare rib I'm afraid that as my son won't get his TAK till Crimbo I can't help ya out !

What everyone has said so far is all true.
I really like my DM but a lot of that may be to do with the fact that it is a little something different that not everyone can buy easily although saying that they do come up regularly on the exchange and are still at a good cost for what you are getting.
Now onto the TAK; If this is the knife you finish up with, please don't think you are getting second best because from my initial observations this looks and feels to be a pretty perfect all round knife. Even though not quite as thick as the DM, this is still one big thick knife that you are never likely to break. With the full flat grind I would also guess the TAK to be a better cutter although the DM is not as bad as some would have you believe !!!
Steel wise both are good old Carbon steel, the DM should be the tougher steel and the TAK should have the better edge holding although I doubt in actual normal use you would find much difference in one over the other !

Sorry no pics bro but I hope I have helped you decide slightly and I'm sure you will be happy with either knife and both should last you a lifetime !!!!!:D:thumbup:

Pitdog--No problem man, its kind-of a mute point now that I know its not a readily available option.

I'm confident in the quality of the TAK and know that I'll be really happy with it. I'm just one of those over analytic people that has to weigh all of the options.

Thanks for your and everyones thoughts, it is greatly appreciated.
