We all like going for hikes and spotting bears, deers, raccoons, etc but animals like these are often evasive and so we can become dissapointed.
Excitement can still be found, however, if we downsize our expectations a little and concentrate on some of the forests smaller creatures !!!

This little Banana slug was my first spot on my mini safari today !

This one looked like he couldn't decide where he wanted to go !!!!

I then came upon this forest beetle feeding on the remains of some long deceased bird !

I'm not too great when it comes to ID'ing spiders, anyone know what kind made this web ?

This is the 3rd deer carcass I have found in this area, I have also found Cougar scat nearby but the local park ranger still tried to tell me that there are no Cougars here and that the deer are probably wounded by hunters and then die in the depths of the forest !!!!!

Me and Maisy then headed off into the swamp area....

What better knife to have in a swamp than a SwampRat !!!

I think of the swamp's muddy floor as an up to date guide book that shows me all the creatures that live in the forest, it is just a matter of learning to read the book( tracks ) !!!

As I was checking out some deer tracks I spotted another swamp dweller, this little Newt, I guess he was a virtual giant compared with the other creatures I had found today !!!

He didn't want to hang around with me and headed back off into his house....

Check out how old Maisy looks in this pic !!!!!

And a total different look in a photo taken straight after !!!

We then headed back for a much needed cup of tea !!!

Great pics, and great looking hike!

I love looking for banana slugs, and newts and salamanders when I hike the Santa Cruz mountains. It's amazing what you'll find by just lifting up an old rotting log.

P.S. It's funny seeing a banana slug that isn't yellow. What the hell kinda bananas do you crazy Canadians eat anyway?!

LOL !!!

Yeah I have seen your bright yellow ones in pics, I must admit that yours do look pretty cool....as slugs go !!!:D

Hey pit, from what I can see, that might be a funnel weaver spider.(the web is cool) I had a run in with one not too long ago. Didn't turn out so well for the spider. I can handle a lot of things, but being surprised by a big spider that's half the size of my hand ain't one of them! Not harmful to humans, but psychologically harmful enough to make me almost soil myself! :D -Matt-

This kind. Why what's it to ya?

Hey pitdog, some guy named after a big ugly flat fish is dissin' ya'!

:DDoc:D

Oh man, I gotta teach you how bananas work...

See, bananas are the OPPOSITE of a traffic light. Green means hold on, yellow means go ahead, and red means were the F**k did you get that banana?!:D

I guess brown speckled bananas must mean you're from Canada.:p

P.S. I resent that remark. I might be ugly, but I am NOT flat!

Cool pics! I need to out sometime soon and do the same thing. Last time I did I found a Mudpuppy, a cool little creature. By the way, I kill every spider I see, as well as destroy their webs. I hate walking into those things.

Something to think about: if you kill every spider you run into, just think of how many biting and stinging insects you are "saving!" Those scary ol' 8-legged monsters make our excursions into the great outdoors a LOT nicer, in my opinion! :D

Ron (who hates being eaten alive by the 6-legged monsters out there!:D)

Yeah that's my thought exactly Ron, I don't really like spiders but I despise flys even more so I just leave the spiders be and let them do what they do best !!!!

I never kill a spider... unless he's inside my house. Outside, I really appreciate the work they do. Inside, I use RAID...

I can keep the flying pests away by other means a.k.a. OFF. I guess I just like to enforce my dominance :D. Nobody is safe!!! By the way, I like killing ants and bee's the most incase you were wondering

On every suburban acre there are approx. 50-60,000 spiders. Each spider consumes about 100 insects a year. So, that's about 5 million flying, biting, stinging, or otherwise annoying pests that you don't have to deal with. The number of spiders naturally goes up in the more remote areas, but you get the idea.
Spiders are mother nature's Orkin man :D
By the way, nice pictures there, thanks for taking us along on your micro-safari.
