Here's a picture of a Piute deadfall I made last autumn. I like the trigger mechanism. I think it's faster than a figure 4.

The cordage shown was made on the spot. It's Flemish twisted Evening Primrose. Once you get down the cordage making method, it takes less than 5 minutes to turn out enough to do the trap. I figure there is about a foot of cordage made. Evening primrose is strong enough to hold the stone which probably weighs about 5-6 pounds.

Here's a close up of the trigger.

The bait was acorns. The sticks were whatever I found lying around. Probably a maple. Another thing I like about the trap is that it can be easily made without a knife.

No animals were hurt during the making of this trap as they were not interested :) Hope you enjoyed it.

So the animal hits that lowest horizontal stick, releasing the small stick with the string attached to, thus making the rock come down?

Want to make sure I've got it correct.

Thanks for sharing.

myright -exactly. You ca vary the sensitivity of the trap with the length of the crossbar. Like a lot of traps, it's a fulcrum effect.

w00d - gotta love youtube. some really good stuff there.

Got it! Makes perfect sense. I've never tried to set up a trap before and look forward to playing around next time I'm out and about.

Nice I Love the paute deadfall... I don't know about the action being faster than a fig. 4 but I think it is a little more user friendly if you have the cordage..Nice job on the cordage btw.

the paiute deadfall is my go-to trap for small game. If you have cordage or are proficient at making it (only needs about 12 inches per trap) the paiute is faster to set than the figure four and you keep you fingers out from under the rock while setting it.

Here are a few pics.

This set up is very cool, and looks much easier to set up.Im going to give this a try, thanks for posting the Piute deadfall

I have tried the trap but found its takes alot of time to set it up. Been playing with this set up more and its realy easy to set up but a knife helps alot and a small saw helps even more

How often do you catch something in a trap, For everytime it gets trigerd???

SASHA- I like your split stick trigger on the deadfall. I have tried that technique a few times with the split in the center but I usually use a round rock or log as a base and point the bottom of the trigger stick to minimize friction and make the trigger "faster" this pic from Wildwood Survival shows what I'm talking about.

I usually get one squirrel for every two or three deadfalls triggered. Snares, on the other hand, are usually triggered only when they are successful. My favorite is the twitch up snare. Its easy to set in the winter when hare and rabbit tracks are visible.
