I have not heard much if anything about it. I didn't even know it was a thing until it was pointed out to me.
I have since experienced it on a few knives, including a high end piece.

Is it normal?
Does it have any functional draw-backs?
What are your thoughts on it?

Pivot lash is when the pivot hole in the blade is larger than the pivot barrel. When the blade is between open and close, you can move it.

Ok. Thanks. I've been on this forum for over 20 years and I've never seen that term before.

I would just call that a poorly fitted pivot, or "slack", or "play". I didn't know it had a name. I can't help but wonder if it's a term started by some youtuber.

I'm going to stick with my terminology. "Pivot lash" just sounds to hip/youtubey for me. :)

EDIT: Out of curiosity I just did a full forum search for the term "pivot lash". The first (oldest) result I saw for it is January, 2020. I guess I didn't read those threads.

This looks more like when the detent hole is too big for the detent ball.

If pivot lash is when the pivot hole is too big for the pivot barrel causing movement between opened and closed…then almost all CRK’s exhibit this.
Am I seeing this correctly in my head?

I'm just guessing at what the OP was calling Pivot lash. I'd probably call it detent slop or loose detent. In my video the blade would rattle if you shook the knife in the closed position. That knife is back at the maker now. I think a larger stop pin and maybe an adjusted (ground) lock insert would fix the issue. I'll see what the experts say.

Idk how to send a DM. I wanted to ask you about your custom Ti-lite blades

oh that's called 'detent lash' and yes it's horrible, definitely something to address and either decide to keep it as a disfavored specimen if it's good enough or a good enough deal otherwise, or send it back, or pass it along to someone who doesn't mind it.

Actually detent lash/play is when the detent hole is bigger than the detent ball. :D

I think that maybe you just got the quote mixed up?

Pivot lash or pivot play how ever you wish to put it is when the pivot hole in the blade or the pivot barrel is not high precision and there is an unacceptable 'gap' in there between the two parts, 'D' tent play is another thing entirely, when you are in the final stage of assembly and machining of the 'D' tent with a carbide spade drill, when you center punch the 'D' tent with a solid carbide center punch, 'if' you center punch just a few thou out of place and you go ahead and drill the 'D' tent that blade becomes totally 'scrap' because you can not fix this issue, it is one of the most sensitive operations on building folders, you can not sell that knife with 'D' tent play.

Wait...I think we are mixing two different things: pivot lash vs detent rock/play. Pivot lash is like what ferider explained while detent rock is what the hinderer Project X shows in that video.

Edit: the above two folks beat me to it.
