detent lash aka detent play bugs the hell out of me. I've had a few production knives with it, and as farid. said, it basically just scraps the whole thing and it should never be sold. Pivot lash isn't as bad of an error. Still not fantastic as their tolerances, parts, and machining are off, however unless it's really bad you don't usually know unless you check for it specifically. My recommendation, just don't check for it unless you think something's wrong, because it can put a bad taste in your mouth about a knife that you previously thought was basically perfect. Atleast that's happened to me before.

Actually detent lash/play is when the detent hole is bigger than the detent ball.

I think that maybe you just got the quote mixed up?

Lash is a stretch for a term for defining slop in interface machining. Let's call it "IT" interface tolerance. Sometimes IT is great and sometimes IT sucks. Sometime I tolerate IT other times I don't. But it is what IT is. And with that I will show myself out.
