What is everyone using to lube thier pivots? I have been using a bicycle chain lube called White Lightening. Its a dry wax based lube, goes on wet but drys in seconds leaving behind just the wax. I was using 3in1, but I found it would attract more lint.

i tried white lightening and didnt like it, imho great for bikes, not so good for knives.

my favorite is tuffglide, or rem-oil, the rem-oil is available at walmart for $1.50 or so FWIW, of the 2 the tuffglide is a tad better but the rem-oil is also plenty good.

a lotta folks like militec, i also like it on some stuff, but some knives, i guess with tighter tolerances maybe, dont seem to like it and get sticky, works great on some though.

triflon, triflow, breakfree, outers gun oil, all work ok too, my dad swore by 3-1 for everthing.

I have been using Mili-Tec grease, but want to try the "Hi Slip" grease...

Heres what the web site says about it...
"HI-SLIP GREASE - A synthetic blend containing the finest solid lubricants available. Lubricates and protects from -65 degrees Fahrenheit /-54 degrees Centigrade to the hottest desert temperatures, and is extremely resistant to water wash off. HI-SLIP GREASE prevents galling even under extreme conditions. HI-SLIP GREASE is formulated specifically for use in firearms and in extreme conditions. HI-SLIP GREASE offers the beneficial properties of conventional lubes, while incorporating the latest synthetic and dry film molybdenum disulfide technology to extend its functional range from the standpoint of both temperature and load carrying ability."

I've got a couple syringes of the stuff. Top quality product, very high moly content compared to something like moly wheel bearing grease. While I've played with it on folders it's just not well suited. Performance notwithstanding, moly grease tends to get on everything you don't want it to get on. It may be really good for dissasembled knives to lube the pivot pin itself, but if you use even a tiny bit too much it'll squeeze out when you put it back together and get all inside your pocket, and on your hands when you use the knife.

For most knives, especially "tacticals" and most especially the AO's, I like Militec-1. It's at it's very best if you can disassemble the knife, clean it thoroughly, then apply the Militec and "cure" it with heat per the directions. But even if you just have to apply a tiny drop to the pivot joint and let it work it like an ordinary oil, it's a great lube.

Second choice is FP-10, which I do find on certain knives is maybe even a little slicker than Militec-1; just depends on the construction of the knife and materials. However it tends to attract more lint.

Third choice is plain mineral oil -- clean, cheap, and food safe.

I'm using high temperature food grade water resistant grease on some of my folders now. I like the smooth feel it gives the movement.

I'm with Dog of War Militec-1 is the best and IMO by far.
Buy a small bottle and use it very sparingly, you won't regret it.

Just bought this from a hobby shop the other day and haven't had a chance to use any of it, but I'm pretty excited about the range of options, especially how effective possible combinations will be. Anyone here ever try this stuff?

Aside from this new (to me) product, I've used the following lubes with much success:

--CRK Fluorinated Grease
--South Bend Precision Oiler Multi-Purpose Lubricant
--Abu Garcia Silicote Reel Oil
--Abu Garcia Silicote Reel Lube w/ PTFE (needs to be cut w/ less viscous oil)
--Ardent Reel Butter Oil
--Ardent Reel Butter Grease (needs to be cut w/ less viscous oil)
--Ardent Reel Butter Bearing Lube
--DuPont Teflon Multi-Use Dry, Wax Lubricant (used to cut high viscosity lubes)
--Cling Air Tool Oil
--Wahl Hairclipper Oil
--OFNA 7,000 weight Diff-Lock Silicone Oil (used to pre-treat surfaces to be lubed with other products)
--mineral oil (cut with clove oil b/c it's too 'tacky' on its own)

And, yes, I am aware that I have a problem.:o

i actually use sewing machine oil. it works great and lasts awhile. can probably find it at walmart/meijer
