PJ Cotton Balls, Your Preference?

Alrighty, Test 2 complete.

I made some more saturated CB and used some smeared ones I made earlier in a baggie.

Here are my tools of choice. Gossman striker, and an Otter, Bobcat, and Mouse GG firesteel.

Smeared on the left, saturated on the right with my small tin (made from Logitec G5 mouse weight tin) with my Gossman striker and a Going Gear Bobcat.

Spread out CB. Made sure to get lots of wisps and fluff, the extras are below.

Both of them took one spark to start. I lit them both at 2:45. You can see the flame on the smeared one spread right away, but on the saturated one it spread slowly.

Here's about 30 sec later.

This is kind of a cool shot mid-burn. (Avatar now)

Here is what the flames look like at 2:49.

As you can see the smeared one is totally out. Saturated? Still going strong!

Here's the flame on the saturated one at 2:55.

Small, but still burning.

Here it is at 2:57. Total burn time of 12 minutes.

I flipped the remains over and lit them too see how long they burned. Both lit again on the first spark, and burned for about a minute. Just checking if it would work, didn't take a picture.

I'm going to use saturated CB in my kit. I like the burn time and ease of use. There's also the added bonus of being just as easy to start. They're also very simple to make. I just scoop the Vaseline into a small cat food tin and melt it on the stove, take it off and stick a few CB in there and let them soak it up. Let them cool of and put them in a plastic bag.

Pertroleum jelly...is that basically vaseline? Because I've been practicing with handsanitizer and cotton balls, didn't know if I was using the right stuff...They light in about 15-20 pulls of the firesteel, a horrible colemans one that broke off a magnesium block.

Yes, petroleum jelly is Vaseline.

I don't use saturated and mine still usually burn for around 7-8 minutes. Maybe I just smear in more Petroleum jelly. Either way you go, you should be able to get a fire with them.

The one that I burned in the pictures was the first into the bag with the glob, and I was mushing and mixing for for a good couple minutes.

Yup!

Buy the generic store brand or no name stuff , it,s a lot cheaper .It's exactly the same stuff . As long as it says petroleum jelly. Useful for allsorts of things , including firestarting :D

Duct tape also works well for storing them. Cut an x slit in the duct tape, pull it out, fluff, and light. You can sprinkle some magnesium from your bar directly on it, the duct tape keeps everything from blowing around, and it burns too!
